SINGAPORE
US secretary of state Antony Blinken said today the US was not involved in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and reiterated the importance of a ceasefire in Gaza.

This is something we were not aware of or involved in. It’s very hard to speculate,
Blinken said in an interview with Channel News Asia during a visit to Singapore.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed Haniyeh’s death, hours after he attended a swearing-in ceremony for the country’s new president.

Haniyeh, who leads the Palestinian resistance group and is normally based in Qatar, has been the face of Hamas’s international diplomacy as the war set off by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct 7 has raged in Gaza.

I’ve learned over many years never to speculate on the impact one event may have on something else,
Blinken said when asked what impact Haniyeh’s death might have on the war.

The assassination, less than 24 hours after Israel claimed to have killed a Hezbollah commander it said was behind a deadly strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, could be a major setback for chances of a ceasefire agreement in the 10-month-old war.

Blinken, who has been in Asia since late last week, said a ceasefire and the release of hostages being held in Gaza was crucial and the US would do everything to make that happen.

It’s vitally important to hopefully put things on a better path for more enduring peace and more enduring security, so that focus remains.

He said the teenager’s family reported the matter to the police at around 11.30am. Kumar added that the Muar police headquarters is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

He said the boy did not suffer any serious injury and advised the public to wait for the results of the investigation as well as the official statement from the police.

The family reported that the boy returned home on his own. When questioned, he said he was in the area throughout the time he was reported missing,
 Kumar told reporters.

Kumar advised parents to keep an eye on their children, adding that parents must monitor their children’s movement, including their travel to and from school as well as their social interactions.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today mourned and condemned the assassination of Hamas political bureau chairman Ismail Haniyeh.

In a statement, Anwar said he is deeply concerned how the murder would affect Palestinians, saying it was a move designed to derail peace talks amid a protracted crisis there.

“This was a murder of the most heinous kind, plainly designed to derail ongoing talks aimed at ending the carnage in Gaza that has claimed over 40,000 lives. It is patently clear that this could only have been carried out in an environment of utter impunity.

“Only the heedless and unconscionable will not see the need to intensify pressure on Israel to stop their murderous rampage,” said Anwar.

He expressed his concerns for the Palestinian people, whom he said have already been so cruelly subjected to so much pain, hardship and suffering for so many decades.

“Detractors who have criticised me for meeting with Ismail Haniyeh in the past, fail to appreciate Haniyeh’s profound desire for a peaceful Middle East and a Palestinian nation restored to its rightful dignity.

“I mourn the loss of a dear friend and a valiant advocate for his people,” he said.

On his social media accounts, Anwar shared his phone call to Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim — where he expressed his condolences.

“A few days ago, we received the latest information from our brothers in Turkey, and it is clear that the late brother Ismail was a pillar of this struggle, and one of the things he fought for was a peace agreement to restore the rights of the Palestinian people.

“There are clearly elements of sabotage. They do not want this peace agreement to succeed,” Anwar tells Naim.

Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said the Malaysian government condemned the assassination urged for an immediate and thorough investigation so those responsible can be brought to justice.

All mosques under the supervision of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) have also been instructed to organise absentee funeral prayers for Haniyeh's death.

Hamas announced earlier that Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike targeting his residence in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Last week, Anwar said he welcomed the agreement between Fatah and Hamas, inked in Beijing, which aims to strengthen Palestinian unity.

Anwar said the Beijing Declaration represents a promising step towards achieving Palestinian solidarity, so crucial for realising the rights of the Palestinian people.

Noting that international backing is essential, Anwar also urged governments that have not yet done so to recognise the State of Palestine and support these unity efforts.

Ukraine says it repelled one of Russia's largest drone attacks of war

Summary

  • Air force says it shot down all 89 Russian drones
  • Ukraine says drone attack was one of war's largest
  • 'Significant' number of decoy drones used, Kyiv says
  • No casualties or major damage reported

KYIV, July 31 (Reuters) - Ukraine's air force said on Wednesday it repelled one of Russia's largest long-range drone attacks of the war overnight, shooting down all 89 drones launched at Kyiv, the surrounding region and other areas.

The attack, which came more than 29 months after
Russia's full-scale invasion, primarily targeted Kyiv and the surrounding region where authorities said more than 40 drones were shot down. An air raid alert remained in place most of the night.

"This is one of the most massive attacks by Shahed-131/136 strike drones," the air force said, naming the type of drone it says Russia has used in the thousands for strikes on Ukraine.

Military spy agency spokesman Andriy Yusov said in televised remarks that Russia had used a "significant" number of decoy drones that were not loaded with explosives to try to deplete Ukraine's air defences and also identify their locations.

Kyiv, which has repeatedly appealed to allies to supply more air defences, conceals the locations of its air defence units, which are tasked with engaging daily missile and drone attacks by Russia.

A military spy spokesman told Reuters last week that Russia was now using
new cheaply-produced drones to film the location of Ukraine's air defences, assess damage and to act as decoys.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said the latest drone attack was the seventh conducted against the city in July.

No civilian or critical infrastructure took a direct hit, but debris damaged the roofs, windows and facades of 13 private residences in the region, authorities said.
Some 11,500 residents sheltered for safety in metro stations in the night as the drones came in several waves from "all possible directions," city authorities said.

Belarusian Hajun, an opposition group that monitors military activity in Belarus, said that at least five Russian drones had flown into Belarusian airspace during the attack and that Minsk had scrambled a fighter jet in the evening.

Minsk, a close Kremlin ally, has not publicly commented on any such incident. Ukrainian military analysts have said Russia may fly drones via Belarus to minimise their flight time in Ukrainian airspace - and exposure to air defences - before they strike.

The Ukrainian air force also intercepted a Kh-59 missile fired at the southern region of Mykolaiv, it said. Local authorities had not reported any damage there as of Wednesday morning.

There was no immediate comment from Russia.
Kyiv and most of central and eastern Ukraine were under air raid alerts from 2000 GMT on Tuesday. Air defence systems were engaged on the approaches to Kyiv and the region outside the region several times in the night, Popko said.

Reuters reporters heard numerous blasts that sounded like air defence systems engaging targets.
