Summary

  • Amanah’s Seri Serdang assemblyperson Abbas Azmi has forecast an explosive future for Perikatan Nasional.

  • He claims internal divisions are growing wider and likens the situation to a timebomb.

Amanah assemblyperson Abbas Azmi has forecast an explosive future for Perikatan Nasional amid the coalition’s secretary-general Azmin Ali’s attempts to woo non-Malay votes.

Likening the current situation in the Muhyiddin Yassin-led opposition coalition to a “ticking time bomb”, he said PN cannot be trusted to lead.

“PN appears to be in turmoil among its component parties. Every day, the division within PN becomes more apparent,” he added in a statement.

Abbas, who is also the Selangor Pakatan Harapan information chief, said the issue started with PAS’ Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar resigning as PN’s treasure-general.

He then noted that when Azmin (above) suggested that a snap general election could be held this year, PAS did not respond.

“This further shows that Azmin’s appointment as secretary-general continues to divide PN,” he claimed.

“It is also visible on social media, especially among PN’s media activists, influencers, and cyber-troopers, that they have begun to openly clash. This shows how the division among PN’s media activists is worsening, reflecting the internal turmoil within PN itself. They are openly exposing each other’s shortcomings,” he added.

Abbas pointed out that Gerakan is also seen as “going against the tide” often, particularly regarding issues concerning non-Malay interests.

“These public disagreements highlight the instability within PN’s internal politics. PAS and Bersatu, eager to capture Malay support with often extreme issues, are displeasing to Gerakan.

“Gerakan’s presence in PN is seen as merely a token party dominated by non-Malays, yet its influence and role are limited by PAS and Bersatu,” he added.

‘Azmin not as impressive’

Given the divisions, Abbas asked how people can trust PN to lead Malaysia.

“Azmin’s attempt to woo the non-Malay population for support is merely a bait, and given the current internal situation of PN, it seems unlikely that what is promised by PN through Azmin can be fulfilled.

“In fact, Azmin’s reputation as the menteri besar of Selangor in the past was not as impressive as the current Selangor state government under the unity government,” he claimed.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported Azmin urging the Chinese community, particularly in Selangor, to give PN the opportunity to govern the state and revive the economy.
