Summary

  • Teoh Beng Hock’s family questions why the investigation is focusing on them instead of “more suspicious” individuals.

  • His sister will reveal “10 doubts” at a press conference tomorrow.

  • The family of Teoh Beng Hock is urging the police to focus their investigation in the right direction by highlighting “10 key doubts” surrounding the former political aide’s 2009 death.

Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) chairperson Ng Yap Hwa expressed the family’s frustration over the investigation’s emphasis on them rather than the key suspects.

“They want the police to shift their attention to the MACC officers who were present at the Selangor office on the night Beng Hock died, as these individuals are the most suspicious,” he said, adding that the family has firmly refused to provide additional statements.

Ng also announced that a press conference will be held tomorrow, where Beng Hock’s sister, Lee Lan, will present “10 key doubts”.

“Lee Lan, Beng Hock’s younger sister, will attend the press conference and urge the police to thoroughly investigate these 10 key doubts if they are genuinely committed to uncovering the truth,” he added.

‘Remember Beng Hock in party polls’

In an obvious reference to DAP, Ng told Malaysiakini he hoped that those “who are busy preparing for party election remember Beng Hock’s case”.

DAP and Pakatan Harapan had often leveraged the political aide’s death during past elections.

Since the police reopened the investigation on Feb 5 into Beng Hock’s death, officers have revisited the crime scene using new technologies and announced plans to summon 30 individuals for questioning.

Ng himself provided a statement to the police on Feb 7 and submitted a list of 34 individuals involved in the MACC operation 16 years ago.

He also emphasised that the police should rigorously investigate these officers.

Over a decade ago

On July 16, 2009, Beng Hock, then a political aide to Selangor DAP leader Ean Yong Hian Wah, was detained overnight for questioning on the 14th floor of MACC’s office in Shah Alam.

He was later found dead on the fifth-floor landing of the building.

In July 2011, a Royal Commission of Inquiry concluded that his death was due to suicide.

However, in September 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death was caused by multiple injuries from a fall, which was accelerated by “an unlawful act or acts of a person or persons unknown,” including MACC officers involved in the case.
In May 2015, the government agreed to pay Beng Hock’s family RM600,000 as a settlement for a civil suit initiated in 2012 for negligence resulting in his death.

In January 2022, his parents filed for a judicial review to compel the police to complete investigations into his death.

On Jan 27, Bukit Aman CID director Shuhaily Zain stated that police would soon recall witnesses in the case, following the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s directive on Nov 21 to reopen and thoroughly reinvestigate all aspects of the death.

Last August, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government agreed to reopen investigation papers into the case.

He assured the public that the probe would be conducted “transparently and fairly without any external interference,” particularly in light of the Court of Appeal’s 2014 ruling.

The Teoh family remains steadfast in their demand for justice, hoping that renewed scrutiny will finally uncover the truth behind his tragic death.
