PETALING JAYA
Tapah Umno Youth chief Fahmi Ahmad Jakhisi says he is “not good at lobbying or asking (for things)”, following reports that he is likely to be Barisan Nasional’s pick for the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election.

Speaking to FMT, the Perak Umno Youth vice-chief said he would leave it to Umno and BN’s leadership to pick the best candidate.

He said as a member of the election machinery, he would do his best to ensure that the seat traditionally held by Umno would remain in BN’s hands.

“Tapah Umno Youth will follow what the party decides. Whoever the candidate is, we will support them because it is important to ensure BN wins,” he said.

Earlier today, FMT reported that Fahmi was said to be among the frontrunners to be fielded as BN’s candidate for the Ayer Kuning by-election, after Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said his wing had already identified a potential candidate to defend the seat.

A source told FMT that Fahmi had received the blessings of BN at the state and federal level.

Previously, Perak Amanah chief Asmuni Awi said his party would make way for BN to put forward a candidate representing the unity government.

PH certain to help Umno

Commenting on predictions by analysts that Umno would face a challenge in getting support from Pakatan Harapan’s voters, especially DAP supporters, Fahmi said he believed the close cooperation among the unity government’s component parties would prevail.

“It is impossible that PH would be unable to get their supporters to vote. Whether they want to or not, they have to help us win and strengthen the Perak government,” he said.

Fahmi said Tapah Umno Youth would aggressively campaign among the constituency’s youth, and make the most of social media to reach out to them.

He said he was a little worried that the by-election would be called in the month of Syawal – the Islamic month heralded by Hari Raya Aidilfitri – as Muslim voters living in other towns might be reluctant to return again to vote.

“I am confident that Ayer Kuning’s voters will go out to vote. My only worry is that if the by-election is held during the Raya month, outstation voters who have already returned for Raya may not want to return again.

“We will try our best. This is a hurdle we may have to face,” he said.

The Ayer Kuning by-election will be held after its incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, 59, died after suffering a heart attack following a friendly football match in Penang.

In the 15th general election, the Tapah Umno chief won the seat with a 2,213-vote majority in a five-cornered fight.
