NST - Save the country's money, says Rais on plans to air World Cup matches over RTM (extracts):

KUALA LUMPUR: With Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) set to broadcast more than half of the football matches of Fifa 2018 World Cup, a former Umno minister took to Twitter to air his thoughts on the matter.

UPDATE: Rais Yatim has joined Pribumi.

Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim in a brief posting tonight zoomed in on the projected figure of RM40 million that the endeavour is said to cost.

"The proposal that RM40 million will be used for the festival of broadcasting the football matches on RTM must be rationalised by the minister," Dr Rais said, most likely referring to the Communication and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

"If it is from the government, the policy of saving does not make sense.

Karl Marx: "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people".

Give the masses their opiate to satisfy their addiction
For RM30 million, the drug calms mindless mongrels
Hypnotise them from rabid viciousness to submission
Subduing restlessness and silencing hysterical vocals

Fix their green-hued eyes on the green fields of footies
Keep their most violent minds on 22 people in battles
And stuff debased mouths with kacang, chips & cookies
There's no need to worry they'd even change channels

By then, it'll 2023, wakakaka.

hope it's TSG, Zaid, Sangeet, Hafidz or Maryam

  1. This Rais Yatim report has been overtaken by events. The entire RM 30 Million has been covered by sponsors

Sometimes the Government need to spend money to keep people happy.
Don't underestimate the size of the following for the World Cup.
The alternative available for live telecast are costly specially paid Astro Channels or HyptV. A lot of people don't even have Astro.

I can think of far worse ways to spend RM 40 Million.

Its less than 1/2 week worth of debt repayment on the stolen 1MDB funds, which the Opposition side were (still are ?) cheering on, with nothing to show for it.

Kaytee, you have just confirmed DSHA and PAS are all Marxists socialists cloaked under religious robes and utterances.

How philosophically true it is of poor human beings who cannot differentiate between religion and politics.

    1. Just because people like you worships socialism & communism religiously, it doesn't turn it into a religion not matter how hard you try.

    6. Wakakakakaka…

      Who r the "willing" sponsors?

      That's WHY u r only a dedak induced wordsmith!

In a commercial world if the media has the largest possible reach (rtm), then there will be more sponsors queuing up to pay decent money to buy advertisement slots than maximum availability of advert windows!

      Now, can u try again?

    7. Get real, CK! Even back in the 80s, those who were willing to sponsor international matches were tobacco & alcohol drinks companies. Now that prices have skyrocketed since then, only these companies remaining that have deep pockets for it.

And viewership for terrestrial TV has dropped since its heyday. Yet another disincentive for willing sponsors.

      Now, can you try again?

    9. Stop farting nonsense and cut to the chase, CK. Just give us the list of "sponsors" you mentioned and we'll evaluate it.

Keep in mind that tobacco & alcohol sponsorships are frowned upon by sports bodies nowadays. You might get away for the 1st time but don't hope to broadcast next time.

  4. I thought it was old news that it would cost RTM 30M, not 40M, and that sponsors will cover all of it. The broadcast will cost taxpayers nothing.

Gobind is on a mission to lift RTM viewership levels, considering Astro is on the decline, except for sports telecasts. To do that RTM must first of all transmit in HD, as most Malaysians already have HD TVs and improve content and let's face it sports is one really popular content.

    Go Go Gobind....Singh is King!!

  5. Complain about no money and even went to the rakyat with a sad face and a begging bowl, but willing to splurge on free WC matches? Clearly a tactic to put on an interesting show to keep the rakyat entertained & distracted whilst pickpocketing them for what its worth. The rakyat returns home happy but penniless.

  6. i dun watched football, but can we see this from a diff angle, let say under a new ph govt, even the poor can now enjoy thing that they cant afford in the past?

however, i hope the sponsor is no condition attached. the ministry involve must make clear on this.

  7. Amazed this WC issue is still being played again though it's declared not paid by gov. now, the gov needs 2 reveal all e sponsors 2 satisfy KT, John & Unknown, if not, they will keep asking 4 e RM30mil. As I said earlier, if u guys r so calculative, then we (the football fans) r willing 2 crowdfund 4 e license 2 broadcast. i have no problem with dat, even if e money is onli enuf 2 broadcast e final match. so b it. Every single cent is accountable now 4 e new gov by KT, John & Unknown standards. They r keeping watch like hawks so pls satisfy their urgent transparency urges 4 goodness sake. we just wan 2 watch e match in a quadrennial event in peace, thank u! go dig & chase on other issues pls.

    1. You said you want CAT. No? We want to know who are the sponsors/takers? As HY expressed above "no condition attached". Is is too difficult to indulge?

    2. Also if giving donation must reveal the person's name, then please reveal all those who gave for Tabung Harapan. You know, in the interest of transparency and all that you people were shouting about.

  9. I suggest we re-model and run RTM along the lines of BBC, with professionals running the show and independent / neutral on their reporting stance. And maybe merge it with an expanded Bernama which I think does a pretty good job online. Then RTMI will cover all media facets: Radio, TV, Internet. Leave the print media, please.
