MPs accuse Azmin of using racial stereotypes in Parliament

Malaysiakini

PARLIAMENT | Two MPs from Pakatan Harapan today called out International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali for using racial stereotypes in Parliament.

This is after Azmin, in talking about incentives by the government for car buyers, used the example of Mak Cik Kiah buying a Myvi and an Encik (Mr) Hong buying a Mercedes Benz S560.

Khalid Samad (Harapan-Shah Alam) then interjected, saying: "This is racial stereotyping."

Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) then chimed in, saying that Khalid was racist.

Azmin, however, defended his remarks.

"I was just using an example. But I can change it. If Encik Khalid buys a Mercedes Benz..." he said, taking a pause while other MPs laughed.

Khalid piped up, saying Azmin should use the term "YB" instead of "Encik".

Ong Kian Ming (Harapan-Bangi) later added that there was no need for racial stereotypes.

"There is no need for stereotypes of Chinese buying Mercedes, the Malays buying Myvis. This gives an inaccurate portrayal," Ong said.

  1. A Malay guy I know likes to tell a story of how he was one of few Malays who drove a new model Mercedes back in early 1980's
Those days, most people , Chinese as well as Malays usually assumed he was the "Ahmad" or driver.
