Summary

  • Teoh Beng Hock's mother cries at a memorial service for her late son, demanding DAP deliver the truth behind his death.

  • Family reiterates their rejection of financial compensation over Beng Hock's death - saying only justice will suffice.

"Tell DAP to give me the truth," cried Teng Shuw Hoi as she sat beside the grave of her son, Teoh Beng Hock, who died 16 years ago this month after a night of questioning by the MACC.

Her two other children, Teoh Lee Lan and Teoh Meng Kee, then stepped forward to comfort her and move her to the side.

The family were at Beng Hock's grave to offer incense before a memorial service organised by Selangor DAP.

The ceremony at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih this morning began not long after Shuw Hoi's outburst. It started with a minute of silence, followed by three bows before Beng Hock's grave and floral tributes.

The event came less than two weeks after the MACC made a long overdue apology over Beng Hock's death and offered financial assistance for the deceased's son.

The family had rejected the offer, saying they want justice and not money.

They held firm to their position even when DAP leaders bowed to them and asked them to reconsider.

Sister’s plea

Speaking at the memorial service today, Lee Lan drove the message home.

"Along the way, some have smeared us, cursed at us, thrown stones, and said we’re only after money.

“Beng Hock, hearing this, I believe you would laugh. I remember you used to say, ‘A noble man loves wealth, but it must be gained righteously.’ We don’t want a single sen of ill-gotten money. We have never accepted any deal to trade money for a life - we only ask for a fair trial.

“Beng Hock, bowing or stooping won’t solve the problem. We still stand firm, repeating the same demands, and hoping for promises to be fulfilled.

"Whether it was yesterday, today, or tomorrow, our stance remains unchanged.

“Sixteen years ago, we called for justice to be served. Sixteen years later, we hold firm - the truth must be revealed," she said.

Lee Lan then expressed gratitude to DAP leaders and grassroots members, civil society organisations, student representatives, youth movement groups, and members of the public for their continued support in the Teoh family’s pursuit of justice.

The memorial service was packed with civil society members and DAP leaders, including party vice chairperson Teo Nie Ching - one of those who had bowed to the family to consider the MACC offer.

Despite this, only Lee Lan spoke at the event, unlike past memorial events.

After the ceremony, when Raub MP Chow Yu Hui approached the Shuw Hoi to express his condolences, the family matriarch repeated her desire.

She told Chow: “All I really want is the truth. Truly, I want the truth. Don’t let Beng Hock die in vain.”

Beng Hock’s death

In 2009, Beng Hock, who was then-Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah’s aide, was found dead after overnight questioning at Selangor MACC, which was then headquartered at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.

A 2011 royal commission of inquiry ruled that he was driven to suicide due to aggressive interrogation. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled his death was caused or accelerated by unlawful acts, including those of MACC officers.

On Nov 21 last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered the police to complete the investigation into Beng Hock’s death within six months.

In May, the Attorney-General’s Chambers ultimately classified the case as no further action.
