After SIS drops ‘Islam’, Puad challenges PAS to do the same

The Umno Supreme Council member says dropping the word 'Islam' from the party’s name will not alter its struggle

Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said dropping the word ‘Islam’ from ‘Parti Islam Se-Malaysia’ will prevent any confusion.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has called on PAS to emulate women’s rights group Sisters in Islam’s (SIS) decision to drop the word “Islam” from its name.

In a Facebook post, Puad Zarkashi said dropping the word “Islam” from the party’s name will not alter its struggle. PAS stands for Parti Islam Se-Malaysia.

“It is to prevent any confusion,” he said, alluding to the Selangor sultan’s view on the matter.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had in a June 20 post on his official Facebook page, said that SIS should cease arbitrarily using the word “Islam” in its name or any of the company’s publications as this could confuse the Muslim community.

His remarks follow a Federal Court ruling that a fatwa could not be imposed on an organisation like SIS, which could not “profess” a religion.

Earlier today, SIS said it decided to drop the word “Islam” following advice from the Selangor ruler.

The group said the decision was made during an extraordinary general meeting on July 11 and that it would now use its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia).

The group’s executive director, Rozana Idris, said despite dropping the word, it would “remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating gender equality and justice in Islamic family law”.
