KUALA LUMPUR: Lieutenant-general Johnny Lim, the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to become a three-star general, has clarified that he is only retiring next year.
Lim made the clarification after news reports claimed that he had retired.
Lim said he paid a courtesy visit to defence minister Khaled Nordin on Wednesday and had snapped a picture with the minister earlier today when they met again at a Warriors’ Day celebration.
Khaled, Lim said, thanked him for his service and wished him well after they discussed his retirement plans.
“I don’t know why every newspaper said I have retired. It is deceiving,” he told FMT.
Lim also took exception to comments by netizens in response to such news reports, labelling them as “demeaning”.
Last month, the armed forces marked a historic milestone with Lim’s promotion to lieutenant-general.
Lim, a Melaka native, studied at SK St Francis from 1973 to 1978 and SMK St Francis from 1979 to 1983.
He underwent cadet training under the 25th Regular Commissioning Course and subsequently trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK before being commissioned into the Ranger Regiment.
Lim also clarified that although his promotion was reported in June, the appointment was actually backdated as it had to go through a process before the official ceremony.
“So by the time I retire next year, I will have served 10 months as lieutenant-general.”
