While the Opposition and crowd voiced out against the Prime Minister during the recent Turun Anwar rally, a PAS member was spotted reciting Qunut Nazilah, one of the prayers to “bring down” PMX.

The Federal Territory’s Mufti, however, said that it is against Islamic teachings to recite the Qunut Nazilah against fellow Muslims.

But first, what is Qunut Nazilah?

As per the explanation extracted from the official website of the Mufti of the Federal Territory’s Office, Qunut Nazilah is a prayer recited when the Muslim community is facing a massive disaster, which can range from the spread of disease and massive hunger to conflicts that threaten the safety of Muslims.

However, Qunut Nazilah should not be recited against fellow Muslims.

In recent times, Qunut Nazilah was recited to seek divine protection from the COVID-19 pandemic, and in solidarity for the Palestinians who lost their lives in the conflict with Israel.

What did the politician say during the recital at the rally?

Zulkifli Ismail, Member of Parliament (MP) of Jasin, who recited the Qunut Nazilah, sought the Almighty to deceive those who have deceived Malaysians. Zulkifli also prayed for the leader’s collapse for making an enemy out of the people. The video was shared by the Deputy President of PAS, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

In a statement, Federal Territories Mufti, Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil, stressed that despite differences of opinion among Muslims, it should not be used as an excuse to pray for a curse on fellow Muslims. He said that the practice of Qunut Nazilah also needs to be based on clear boundaries so that it is not misinterpreted or misused to the point of causing division among Muslims.

“Its use should be limited to situations involving real enemies of Islam. Differences in opinions does not grant the recital of Qunut Nazilah, as it will only create division among Muslims.”

“Towards fellow Muslims, we are required to pray for each other’s good and practice forgiveness.”

Ahmad also reminded all Muslims to avoid the misuse of Qunut Nazilah.
