JAIS' Oppression versus Church's Obduracy

I have been one non-Muslim who has consistently NOT supported the Church insistence in using the Allah word to refer to the Christian god in its Bahasa language activities, particularly in its Bahasa section of its weekly newsletter, The Herald - see my post:

(a) Allah, Elohim or Yahweh?

(b) Now, who are the Arab wannabes?

(c) The Church & Allah

... for reasons stated in the above posts.

But I cannot stand the oppressive temerity of those JAIS jackboots raiding the Bible Society in Selangor. For a Muslim body intruding into a non-Muslim domain without proper due legal process is going too f**king far.

While the police might have accompanied JAIS officers, it was reportedly JAIS which conducted the intrusive raid on a non-Muslim facility. It would have been more palatable to non-Muslims if the police (minus JAIS) had been the authority which conducted the raid.

The JAIS raid on a non-Muslim domain is a terrible and highly oppressive precedent.

I am not surprised by Ambiga Sreenevasan's condemnation of the Selangor government's pathetic response, describing it as non-existent or at best weak.

My lack of surprise, in fact a correct anticipation or expectation of the reaction/response by Khalid Ibrahim's Selangor state government, is due to an awareness of today's socio-political reality that, apart from any Islamic matter being a sensitive issue to Khalid Ibrahim, he would be extraordinarily skittish on any areas which might/may involve HRH.

Indeed, according to constitutional expert Professor Abdul Aziz Bari, JAIS reports to HRH and not the MB, thus JAIS' raid would most likely have had the approval of HRH.

Now, fools rush in where angels dare not thread, and while Khalid has shown he is a new manmanlai "Royal MB" of Selangor, he is no fool, more so where and when HRH is concerned. He is not called the "Royal MB" for nothing where it's alleged that Khalid owes his political loyalty not to Anwar Ibrahim or PKR but to HRH.

Mind you, even if JAIS reports to the MB, do you for one bloody instance believe that "Royal MB" Khalid Ibrahim would ever stretch his neck out for the Church (when he had shown he wasn't even going to do that for one of his faves, sweetie Eli Wong), and not just any church but a particularly obdurate one, as shown by Father Lawrence Andrew and his words?

While I have no sympathy for the Church I am concerned by a JAIS that has shown it's increasingly arrogant, intrusive and oppressive for trespassing into non-Muslims' spheres.

In many ways it's worse than the dress codes for non-Muslim activities (eg. koe-tai shows) as ordered (but subsequently backtracked from) by the former PAS government in Kedah, and an earlier incident when a non-Muslim couple were arrested for holding hands in public (allegedly a case of corrupt but vindictive officials framing the couple for not 'coughing up').

But even then, JAIS' raid of the Bible Society's premise by itself didn't take the cake.

What has taken the f**king cake has been the bloody authority's escalating oppression in the police ordering two Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) officials (non-Muslims) who were arrested during the raid to show up at JAIS' office (not police office) next Friday.

Pray tell me, what jurisdiction does JAIS have over non-Muslims?

F**king none!

And that's precisely why I've described that police order as the authority's bloody escalating oppression!

I hope those two BSM officers, Lee Min Choon and Sinclair Wong, will ignore that order to report to JAIS. Why should non-Muslims report to an Islamic authority?

If the order had been to report to a police station then that should be complied with, but a JAIS office? F**k off.

But let's not forget the Church's obduracy has brought the Islamic authority's current heavy-footed stomping on non-Muslims' rights, especially at a time when Muslim "unity" and/or "assertions" would be "useful" to an UMNO-led government trying to divert attention from price increases while its ministers unashamedly live ostentatiously opulent life style.

I knew that Father Lawrence Andrew was going too far when he (also) arrogantly announced that Catholic churches in Selangor would continue to use the 'Allah' word.

To him I offer 1 Samuel 2:3 (KJV) which tells us:

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed

  3. You call Fr Lawrence announcement that Catholic churches in Selangor would continue to use the word "Allah" arrogant.

Have you stopped to consider that this was a statement of a man of cloth defending his and his church's right to use the word "Allah" and that they should not be pushed around?

And mark my words, these Muslim organisations will continue to trample on the rights of the minorities for the simple reason that they can.

It is about time the minorities stood up and tell these Muslim organisations that enough is enough.

Ha, the same f**king jurisdiction u so selectively championed for the Non-Muslims not to used the A-word.

So aint u, to a large extend, contributing to the current scurrilous Jais' raid?

As a Non-Muslim, u r inadvertently reinforcing these troglodyte's precarious assumption about their monopolistic 'right' about a WORD!

Yr past articles gave attributes to their current action, & yet u r now gumption enough to cry murder for this action!

What state of mind is u attending to NOW?

But cruelest cut WOULD be this - 'I knew that Father Lawrence Andrew was going too far when he (also) arrogantly announced that Catholic churches in Selangor would continue to use the 'Allah' word.'!

Should I refer u to the (in)famous argument of one ulama about quoting holy scripture - read the WHOLE chapter, NOT just a particular surat to prove yr point, when u quote Samuel 2:3 (KJV).

    1. Just to remind you of what I had written in my several posts on the Allah-word issue, to wit: **I do not intend to discuss the legal, etymological or historical use of the ‘Allah’ word in the Catholic news letter, the Herald, which has led to the current ‘fiery’ brouhaha.**

**In fact 'Elohim' is used 66 times in a row at the beginning of the Bible before any other Hebrew word for the English word 'God'.**

**There are various other names besides ‘Elohim’ and ‘Yahweh’ to describe God and Jesus, with the latter being found in the New Testament.**

**Really, what is the morality or motivation behind Father Andrew’s rejection of ‘Elohim’, the original name of the Judaist-Christian God, and his insistence on the use of ‘Allah’ to refer to the Christian God when locally it has always been recognized that ‘Allah’ refers to the God of the Islamic faith.**

**Ultimately let us also not forget that both Islam and Christianity are evangelistic missionary religions with an obligation on the faithful to convert the so-called ’pagans’, for altruistic reasons of course. But the late A Powell Davies, a minister of the All Souls Church in Washington, advised us that “True religion, like our founding principles, requires that the rights of the disbeliever be equally acknowledged with those of the believer.”**

**Has Father Lawrence acknowledged the rights and sensitivities of the Malaysian Muslims?**

Friedrich Nietzsche reminded us: “Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal.”

**But I ask of Father Lawrence Andrew: “What is really your goal in obdurately pursuing the use of the word ‘Allah’ to refer to the Christian God in a Malay-language newsletter and Bible when so many other names of your Christian God, with even better biblical pedigree, remain available?”**

Apart from JAIS, no doubt acting under UMNO's instructions to divert attention from rising cost of living as well as keep Malay Muslims on its side, I know exactly who to blame for the escalating religious acrimony.

    2. Kaytee,
Sorry to BUST your BUBBLE, THIS IS THE PART THAT I DISAGREE WITH YOU. In order words, FUCK YOU. Why? Simply you don't have the fucking right to dictate the words christians used in Bahasa Malaysia. Or is it Iban or Bahasa Indonesia.
Anyway this would be a fucking nightmare for UMNO. What if Jais would have unknowingly detained a christian Indonesia diplomat carrying the Bahasa Indonesia that contain Allah word.
I felt that Father Andrew has been very mild liao. Apostle Paul would have told the Roman to just hang him.

Paul Preaches at Rome Under Guard

17 Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: “My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. 18 They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death. 19 The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar. I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people. 20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”

21 They replied, “We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you. 22 But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect.”

23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus. 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe. 25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet:

26 “‘Go to this people and say,
      “You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
      27 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
      hear with their ears,
      understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a]
28 “Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!” [29] [b]

30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. 31 He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!

    3. U keep forgetting the timeline & sequence of event! Intentionally?

      1) Whatever names that had been mentioned, due to the twist of 'event' (wakakak), the Malay-speaking Christian natives know only Allah & this dated back right up to the time when they were converted (approx 600yrs ago & before Islam's expansion in this region), mind u, from animistic belifs.

      2) Whatever the morality or motivation behind Father Andrew’s insistence on using Allah, one of the major consideration would be as stated in (1) above. Besides, what about the RIGHT of freedom of expression within ALL sphere of activities as enshrined in the FC?

      3) Whatever proselytization, u r trying to argue, there r instituted laws to prevent that. Monopolization of a COMMON word, via those state laws that contravene the FC is NOT the way. Moreover, religious sensitivity plays both way.

      4) 'Apart from JAIS, no doubt acting under UMNO's instructions to divert attention from rising cost of living as well as keep Malay Muslims on its side, I know exactly who to blame for the escalating religious acrimony.' 7. Strictly by the law, the PDRM has no jurisdiction in this case, because no Penal Code criminal laws have been broken.
Police accompanied the raid only to provide security , as they do when Jais raid pubs to haul up Muslims drinking alcohol.
On the other hand, it is very doubtful JAIS has any authority to give any sort of order to a non-Muslim religious group. There is no evidence of the group carrying out any activity propogating Christianity among Muslims.

So the deceit carried out here is to use Police to order the Bible society officials to report to JAIS.

There is no point condemning Khalid Ibrahim over this issue.
If JAIP (the equivalent in Penang) carried such a raid in Penang, there's nothing that Lim Guan Eng can do about it either.

What Pakatan can do is to use its majority in the Selangor state assembly to amend the enactment to keep it within the original intent of the law - which is to restrict such sensitive words being used to propogate any other religions among Muslims, and not the catchall universal ban that it seems to be now.
First - and foremost - PAS will need to agree with that, and Second - a doubtful second - Khalid Ibrahim will need some political spine, because the Sultan will not be happy with such an amendment.
Here, we can thank Dr. Mahathir (ugh !) because the Sultan no longer has veto powers over legislation passed by a majority of the House.

  9. It's time to refresh kaytee's memory on the bible. This is a very interesting children story about Daniel & the lion in the den

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_and_the_Lion%27s_Den

Notice that King Darius at the instigation of his officials (sounds very familiar with selangor sultan & his so called officials) issued an decree that no one was to offer prayer to any god or man except him for a period of thirty days. Let us ask kaytee......what did Daniel do?

    For Kaytee's pleasure......

6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

3 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

  10. What about this story?

3 Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace......

Looks like loverboy Najib's 10-point solution on the Allah issue is worth less than used toilet paper.

Point number 5 in the 10-point Solution reads as follows:
“Taking into account the interest of the larger Muslim community, for Peninsular Malaysia, Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia/ Indonesia, imported or printed, must have the words “Christian Publication” and the cross sign printed on the front covers.”
The confiscated Bahasa Bibles fulfilled those two conditions.
Likewise, Point number 7 in the Solution notes that, “A directive on the Bible has been issued by the Ketua Setiausaha (KSU) of the Home Ministry to ensure the proper implementation of this Cabinet decision. Failure to comply will subject the officers to disciplinary action under the General Orders. A comprehensive briefing by top officials including the Attorney-General will be given to all relevant civil servants to ensure good understanding and proper implementation of the directive.”

JAIS officers are on the Government payroll and subject to GO - General Orders.
I'm willing to bet nobody is going to be disciplined, nay likely promoted over this raid.

What goes into the content of religious books (and I'm not talking about newspapers like the Herald) used within the confines of a religious group is no business of Kerajaan Malaysia.

Now, I have my own criticisms of Catholic Church dogma and practices, but in this case Father Lawrence Andrew is perfectly right to stand up for the right of Christians to practice their religion in their own way in peace.

No, we will not be like the German Jews who obediently lined up to board the trains headed for Buchenwald.

You are right. Father Andrew got to stand up to it. Unlike what kaytee is insinuating about the christians, christians generally don't go against the authority. It's stated in the bible that christians got to render to caesar', what's caesar. But this touches on to the fundamental of not just christians but all religion. Muslims felt hurt when the Turkish Kemalist government then enforced the no scarve rules on all Turks. Apa macam? This is fucking cibai wrong. We should ask kaytee to fly over to sarawak & repeat those words in front of the dayakans in the long houses.

RPK says that we non muslims must be very sensitive with the raja2. But then sarawakians no raja....Sorry got Raja Brooke.....Hahahaha, so how....Many dayaks served in Malaya......What stop from not amuking....huh....A case of what goes around, comes around

I think UMNO should stop the nonsense. Time for UMNO to swallow the humble pie & accpeting the rights of the non muslims in accordance to the federal constitution. RPK can go to hell with his royalist attitude. If the blacks who formed the minority able to force the whites to give up power, what about Malaysia?

The on going saga would see Malaysia split into 3. Sabah, Sarawak & Malaya. Even Taib Mahmud would not dare to go against Dayaks, the former headhunters. The Dayakans may revived the head hunting tradition. So don't play play

  19. For the past few decades, the Malays have been falling over themselves to prove their Islamic credentials by slavishly aping Arab mores and superficial cultural practices. This included dress styles which originated from a practical need for protecting the whole body from the scorching desert sun and windblown sand, as well as social attitudes pre-dating Islam which treated women as private chattels of their men, not allowed to show the slightest hint of skin.

What an irony that this Arab-copycat trend has come to a screeching halt when it comes to the Allah issue.
When pointed out that Muslim Arabs seem quite comfortable with Christians among their midst using "Allah" to refer to their Trinity God, these Ketuanan champions now loudly proclaim "we are Malays, not Arabs"

I'm pretty sure this chest beating disallowing Bahasa-speaking Christians from using Allah is about Ketuanan Melayu, nothing to do with Islam per se.

    1. Yes, it's only limited to malaya only. I don't think any sane muslims dare to do them in east malaysia. Hence, such action by JAIS would finally whack them instead. It's very easy to create a diplomatic incident. Boy, the indonesians would love to make plenty of diplomatic incidents with Malaysia. What if JAIS decided to manhandle one Indon (name sound like muslim but is a christian). Die cock stand.

Aiyaa.....Seriously, if Gerakan not being fuckingly stubborn & PPP were to be smart enough to appoint one of PPP melayu candidates as MB, Sultan Idris would have accepted PPP led opposition group in 1969.

What the fuck! I am proud to be a Perakian. Perakians including melayus have been bold enough to squash UMNO from time to time. You can ask kaytee if he knows who Aziz Ishak is. Hahahaha

To DAP, it's kinda damned if you don't & damned if you do situation. DAP got to make noise. MCA already make noise liao. If DAP doesn't take the next step, then DAP = MCA.

    Kaytee,
Can you tell RPK to whack Khalid Ibrahim? Hahahaha! Seriously I have had enough of this royalist fuck especially it's Madhater create such mess against the royalty.

I strongly suggest folks including kaytee to read articles on the raid on Entebbe. No need rocket scientist to guess who's behind the whole shit. Which is UMNO from the beginning? Who runs UMNO now? Najib, Rosmah's wife. Hahahaha

  26. I haven't gotten what actually happened rather than from the AM and MSM. This reaction is the typical action reaction between Muslims and Christians when both don't want to exercise restrain. Both jais and father Andrew are like many provoking and escalating this issue. Its really unfortunate.

At the heart of this issue is our problem of always blaming things on Umno. Even jais action is blamed on Umno. Incredible. This is beyond Umno. Its an overwhelming Malay Muslim issue. Its a sensitive identity cultural issue. And this is the problem of AM of always instigating the non Malays to go all out against this issue. For your info Umno cannot control jais. There is no proof whatsoever instigated it.

KT has been fair in his write on this issue. But from the comments we see wanton disregard of being fair and the need to push to the max. You see some here condemn Najib for not following the 10 points but never bothered whether the Christians do. Sultan and Islamic authority says not to do it. Christians publicly defying doing it rather than privately doing it. What is so wrong with us now that we can't compromise?

The new politics of pushing everything to the max will destroy us. But who cares kan? Our religious differences have even been pushed internationally to seek international body to interfere. I cannot allow out fate to be determined by any other body.

Please read Chandra Muzaffar here. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/sideviews/article/the-allah-controversy-a-ten-point-solution-chandra-muzaffar

    http://www.malaysia-today.net/is-this-yet-another-weapon-of-mass-distraction/

What more you wanna cakap? Simple questions : Support DAP to amend the law? Or agreeing with RPK that it's a courageous move.

Sometimes I do wonder if the blacks in the 60s really bother about the whites when they go on protesting. The Blacks only get 10% of population. They are definitely pendatang. Why? Because they got guns

  31. KT wants face to salvage his Allah write-ups. RPK wants faces to tame his bruised ego while doing a slightly better fit than that hell-bounded tunku aziz.

Father Andrew maintains strsight face while protecting his flock' right to freedom of religious expression. Umno ultras demand face from joe M'sians for publicly confronting ketuanan melayu, while doing the dirty job of diverting raising cost issues as dictated by the boss.

Rosmah wants face to keep up with the right jones of the world, at the expense of rakyat M'sia, while pink lip najib keeps elegantly silence on major national issues to keep his face.

    Everything boils down to face!

Doing it quietly means giving face, no one would raise a finger. The moment u publicize it - ie not giving face, all bets r off. Challenges after challenges would come yr way until u apologise openly to mend yr way.

Now how to settle? Who to give first?

Where is the Mandela of M'sia?

Definitely not in the current crop of politicians, as far as one could see.

Young people of M'sia, this country needs a complete shutdown reboot for her future. Or else it would be bleak for yr future & yr children, while u think facebook/twitter is the best thing happened to u right now!

  32. KT,
This would be the type of catch 22 situations we could expect when we first discussed the Allah issue. There would be more to come what with so many other words being banned. The other States are also just waiting for what is going to happen in Selangor.

You could not blame Father Lawrence for declaring to continue using the word in their BM services for the East Malaysian Christians residing in the peninsular. He has to defend his flock from what has been their practice for generations. Or, would you rather they "sneakingly" do so in secret?

Most of us know from the beginning that it is not about the Herald only. They want a complete ban and they are trying all ways to bulldoze through their intentions. Now you know.

I am expecting you to write more frequently on this issue from now on. Not that I am complaining. I always long to read your interesting articles filled with pretty illustrations too. Cheers, Adam.

  33. Alamak!! You don't understand. Islam must be protected. Sorry, I must not use Allah (being a 100% rolled-gold kafir). But you know what I mean, ok?

As I said Islam has to be protected but from whom? I dunno but maybe from Muslim people who find Christianity attractive. That is why only Muslim (and only the official - rasmi- type) can use Allah. Ahmedis, ismailis, what other have you types not allowed, OK?

Some other religions also use Allah but Malays only want to be Englishmen -- so Allah only for Islam and not Christianity to prevent some thinking that OK to be come Christian because it will make them English!

So this clever government bans Allah! Wunderbar!
