Ahmad Yahya acknowledges his friendship with the Kedah menteri besar but asserts that the council evaluates every case impartially.

PAS ulama council chief Ahmad Yahya said activities like singing and sports are acceptable as long as they are not in conflict with Islamic law.

TEMERLOH
The PAS ulama council has denied claims that it is blindly defending Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor, following criticisms over his participation in karaoke activities.

Its chief, Ahmad Yahya, said the council monitors and advises leaders who engage in activities that could be deemed as misconduct.

He said activities such as singing and sports are permissible as long as they do not conflict with Islamic law.

I am aware that the term ‘ashabul karaoke’, used by Kedahans, has been directed at the menteri besar,
he said in his closing speech at the 70th PAS muktamar here today.

I have been accused of defending friends – the Kedah menteri besar and I have been friends for a long time. The ulama council observes and evaluates whether a matter is considered misconduct.

Apart from leading the PAS ulama council, Ahmad serves as the party’s Kedah state chief, with Sanusi as his deputy.

Ahmad said misconduct can be deemed sinful, and

the PAS ulama council will not defend prohibited actions, especially when they are wrong. We must always uphold fairness
.

He said Sanusi also recited the Quran during the launching ceremony of the Quran festival.

Whether it’s football, kabaddi or any other activity requested by the people, as long as it does not conflict with religious principles, it will be welcomed,
 he said.

What I want to emphasise is this reflects the attitude and stance of the ulama council – we do not defend anyone blindly.

Yesterday, a PAS delegate from Perlis expressed disappointment over the lack of disciplinary action against certain party leaders, particularly those who shook hands with women.

Saifizi Saidon said a party leader who had repeatedly shaken hands with women faced no consequences, while others, including those who took part in karaoke, were defended by PAS scholars.

Although he did not mention any names, Saifizi is believed to be referring to Sanusi regarding the karaoke issue.

He also said the party is drifting from its previous standards of leadership integrity and accountability.PAS ulama council chief Ahmad Yahya said activities like singing and sports are acceptable as long as they are not in conflict with Islamic law.
