A Call for Accountability: Apologies Needed After Halal Certification Decision

In a recent turn of events, Dr. Boo Cheng Hau, a member of the Johor DAP state committee, has urged UMNO Youth leader Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh to issue a public apology to all Malaysians. This call comes on the heels of the Malaysian Cabinet's decision not to enforce mandatory halal certification for restaurants that do not serve pork, a ruling that underscores the nation's commitment to constitutional rights and religious freedom.


Dr. Boo criticized Akmal for what he perceives as a failure to understand the nuances of Malaysia's multi-religious landscape. He emphasized that the Federal Constitution, which enshrines the freedom of religion while recognizing Islam as the official faith, should serve as the guiding principle for government policies. "The Federal Constitution should be the highest guiding principle for any government policies," he stated, highlighting the need for leaders to respect the rights of all citizens.


The Cabinet's decision reflects the concerns raised by DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok, who has long advocated for the protection of minority rights in the face of increasing religious and racial tensions. According to Dr. Boo, Kok's warnings were not merely political rhetoric but grounded in legal and constitutional realities. He noted that her stance resonates with many Malaysians who are grappling with economic challenges, particularly small business owners from both Malay and non-Malay communities.


Furthermore, Dr. Boo expressed disappointment in Akmal's leadership abilities, suggesting that his recent statements reflect a lack of maturity expected from a potential future leader. "He needs to recognize the importance of respecting the rights of multi-faith Malaysians and demonstrate a commitment to avoiding the divisive politics of the past," he asserted.



Dr. Boo also called for a clear acknowledgment from Akmal regarding the role of Malay rulers in safeguarding religious matters and the protection of freedom of religion in Malaysia. This acknowledgment, he argued, is essential for mending the relationship between political factions and improving public sentiment towards Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of the upcoming Mahkota by-election.


The call for apologies is not just about addressing past grievances; it’s about fostering a political climate where inflammatory rhetoric and bigotry do not overshadow the progress Malaysia seeks to make.
