Ismail Sabri told to start with his grandchild’s name before criticising foreign housing project names πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

NINTH premier Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob surely would not have expected so many brickbats to be hurled at him for expressing his dissatisfaction with foreign names of residential developments and streets.

Best remembered for championing the Bahasa Melayu supremacy, the prime minister (PM) with the shortest stint (15 month) had wanted the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Act 1959 (revised 1978) to be amended so as to facilitate enforcement action against property developers who use non-Malaysian names for their projects.

This came about as the Bera MP observed that developers tended to use French and Spanish names for their developments instead of local names.

“They (DBP) cannot impose fines on these developers which is why I feel they should be empowered,” he told the third Simposium Antarabangsa Aspirasi Bahasa Melayu in Kuala Lumpur recently.

But one netizen chided the former UMNO vice-president for his apparent double standard when his own grand-daughter has a western sounding name – Jeanelle Nika Mandagie.

Terpaling Melayu tapi cucu sendiri nama Jeanelle Nika Mandagie. Demikianlah...

This in fact let to some exchanges between the poster Keyboard Gangster (@shmrlwn) and one commenter who pointed out that “the granddaughter is out of his (Ismail Sabri) jurisdiction”.

“People will accuse him of being a busybody power crazy. Come on, look for a stronger argument.”

But Keyboard Gangster countered that if the granddaughter’s name is not under Ismail Sabri’s jurisdiction, “then he shouldn’t have meddled with the name of the streets/parks which is obviously outside his jurisdiction”.

Quite a few commenters agreed that Ismail Sabri has no authority nor jurisdiction to interfere in the naming of real estate projects as such matter is to be ironed out between the developer and the local authorities.

On a broader sense, Keyboard Gangster explained that the reason for his tweet is “a bit harsh” in that this is not the first time that Ismail Sabri had attempted to portray himself as “a defender of Malay destiny”.

“At the height of the Low Yat Riot incident, he mooted establishment of the MARA Digital Mall which is today a flop. It was just hot air with the people taken for a ride.”

For the record, the MARA Digital Mall project was launched in 2015 spearheaded by Ismail Sabri Yaakob who was then the rural and regional development minister with branches in Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Johor Bahru and Kuantan.

In 2019, the rural development ministry said in a parliamentary reply the Kuantan mall was closed in December 2018, the Johor Bahru mall in February 2019 and the Shah Alam location in 2018.
