No place for Mukhriz in
PN either, says an analyst
Azmi Hassan says there is no reason for Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir to dissolve his party to join PN.
by Umno, has no place in Perikatan Nasional (PN) if he is eyeing a top position within the coalition.rejected
Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said PN would not simply offer Mukhriz a leadership post within the coalition. Thus, there is no reason for Mukhriz to dissolve Pejuang to join PN.
Azmi was asked if Mukhriz should set his sights on PN once again after it was reported that two Umno leaders insisted that the party would not allow him to rejoin the party.
Mukhriz was dismissed from Umno in 2016 after the Supreme Council decided that he had breached party discipline by sharing the stage with opposition leaders and constantly attacking Umno and its then president Najib Razak.
He later joined Bersatu, which was established by his father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.
Azmi told FMT that Mukhriz should instead shed the perception that Mahathir, was the main obstacle preventing Pejuang from taking root and garnering support.
“Pejuang must look towards expanding its leadership if it wants to continue. The perception that Mukhriz must become prime minister through Pejuang needs to be erased to save the party.
he said, adding that Pejuang’s grassroots support was too weak and this made it difficult to forge alliances with any major coalition. If this cannot be achieved, it would be better to dissolve Pejuang,
Last Saturday, Mukhriz said he would not return to Umno even if Ahmad Zahid Hamidi no longer helmed the party.
In response, Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi claimed that Mukhriz was actually
to return to Umno and that his return would not give the party any added value.too embarrassed
He also said that Pejuang was trying to be closer to PN but
.I am confident that PN will reject them
Umno Supreme Council member Razlan Rafii, meanwhile, said that the party did not need individuals who only cared about their personal interests.
In March 2023, PN had turned down Pejuang’s application to join the coalition. The party made the application with a view to having its candidates run on a PN ticket in the six state elections, which was eventually held in August last year.
This was after Pejuang lost in every seat it contested in the 15th general election (GE15) in November 2022, with all its candidates, including Mahathir and Mukhriz, losing their deposits.
Awang Azman Pawi from Universiti Malaya (UM) said Pejuang should reform its political strategy by collaborating with smaller parties that share similar agendas to ensure its survival.
He added that this step could offer a new opportunity for Pejuang, which he described as not bringing any added value to Malaysian politics.
he said. The party’s lack of significant support from the majority of voters and distrust from major coalitions, including Barisan Nasional (BN) and PN, indicates that Pejuang is struggling to find its place on Malaysia’s political stage,
