Asri claims Jakim briefed about GISBH but took no action

Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has claimed that the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) was slow to act on issues of aqidah (faith) deviation involving Global Ikhwan Service and Business Holding (GISBH).

Asri (above) claimed that a group of researchers had earlier presented issues related to GISBH to Jakim, but they failed to take any action.

“They may not have picked up this case for certain reasons... some were unwilling to take the risk, and others may have viewed it as insignificant.

“Perhaps some of the group’s (GISBH) beliefs are linked to certain individuals involved, or it may be due to other reasons,” he said in a video uploaded on TikTok by ProMedia Tajdid last night.

The video is part of the Perlis mufti’s weekly lectures at Masjid Alwi, Kangar.

Asri said due to Jakim’s inaction, the research group presented it to the Perlis Fatwa Committee last month.

Following this, Asri gave a lecture making references to GISBH alleging wrongdoing.

Then on Sept 11, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain confirmed that the police had started an investigation into GISBH.

This led to a raid on 20 welfare homes allegedly run by the group, in which police rescued almost 400 children.

Razarudin claimed that at least 13 of those children had been sodomised.

GISBH has denied running the welfare homes raided or abusing children under their care.

‘Criticising Jakim will only cause slander’

International Islamic University Malaysia’s (IIUM) Abu Hafiz Salehuddin yesterday also suggested that Jakim be restructured following its delayed action against GISBH.

The academic claimed that some religious authorities are reluctant to seriously consider the findings compiled by researchers and activists monitoring GISBH.

In response to Hafiz, Jakim’s religious services staff association clarified that Jakim was not an enforcement agency.

“Jakim is not an agency that plays a role in enforcing the law. As such enforcement issues such as in the GISBH case, are not within Jakim’s purview,” association president Mohd Ajib Ismail was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

“However, Jakim always works closely with enforcement agencies such as the police and state religious authorities to ensure all actions taken are based on law,” he added.
