Freedom of speech & expression?

Malaysiakini - Maszlee: I support freedom of speech but not Zakir's 'extremism' (extracts):

Education minister-designate Maszlee Malik has clarified that his support for controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik extends as far as for the latter’s freedom of speech, but not for his alleged preaching of hatred.
Ever since the Simpang Renggam MP was announced for the ministerial post last Friday, criticism against his apparent support for Zakir has surfaced.

In response, Maszlee explained that his support was based on his commitment to the principle of freedom of speech, but that he did not condone any incitement of hatred, as Zakir has been accused of doing.

“I respect freedom of speech, just like I respect freedom of expression,” he told Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview last night.

That's fine but what about freedom of speech and freedom of expression for Shiites, Qadiani, atheists (wakakaka), LGBT, Jews (Judaists), Ismailis, Ibadis, etc?

  2. I think what basically the new Education Minister is saying is that he supports Freedom of speech and expression but not extremism.

    Now, what is extremism?

Is Alvin Tan's case extremism or is Zakir Naik speeches extremism? Which is more extreme and according to whose opinion? IGP? Home Minister? Education Minister? PM?

If both are classified as extremism, then what the Hell is Zakir Naik still doing in this country?

  3. Already talking like a politician. Let's see if he will close vernacular schools. That's a time bomb, nuclear one too.

    1. Private Vernacular or religious schools or international schools should be left alone since they are not Govt. owned and is a preference of some citizens for their children who have their priority for either religion or economic as the main drivers.

We may not agree to their priorities in thinking but let time decides for themselves whether Govt schools are more holistic for their children's future or these private vernacular, religious and international schools.

If the new Govt. feels strongly that Govt. schools are the best option for all citizens and their children, then they must take into account what are the weaknesses currently in Govt. schools which caused the mushrooming of these private schools and rectify them accordingly so that Govt. schools will be once again the preferred option of parents for the future of their children.

If the new Govt. continues with the old ways of justifying the abolishment of private schools whether it is international, vernacular or religious, thru reasons of political Hogwash disguises and talks of Patriotism, Unity, Ketuanan etc, it can only be to the benefit of politicians but not to ordinary parents who wants the best for their children.

The system of creating and supporting Govt. funded vernacular and religious schools must stop since it is well known they were kept alive under disguises for political purposes of championing language, religion and cultures.

  5. Give the guy a break lah...not even 1st full day on the job.

Some guys like Ktemoc were happy to give Najib and his Education Minister a free Teflon pass on everything for nearly 10 years, now only waking up from their coma.

  6. Back in 3rd April 2009, when Najib was sworn in as Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister, my sifu took a reading of Najib's almanac.

He said this man has really, really bad Karma because of acts committed in THIS life. He had a destiny for high office because of good Karma from his past life, but in this lifetime had committed Very dark actions.

His Prime Ministership would not end well.

My sifu has since passed on, but looking at the events of the last week, I realised his view was really prescient.

BTW, I wrote about this in Susan Loone's blog at the time, 9 years ago, so this is not after the fact BS.

  7. There is a properly defined way to settle the Zakir Naik issue, which could not be carried out previously, because the Administration at the time protected Zakir.

The Indian Government, if it has the evidence , can issue an arrest warrant for Zakir Naik. Then request an International
Arrest Warrant through Interpol. With that, the Indian Government can submit a formal Mutual Legal Assistance request to Malaysia to arrest and hand over Zakir Naik.

At that time, the new Administration can carry out the proper legal steps. No need for hysterics.
