Summary
- Lee Lan says the family wishes to get answers and closure while her father is still alive.
- Beng Hock’s sister says the family is deeply upset by the AGC’s “no further action” decision.
Nearly 17 years have passed since the mysterious death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock, yet his family remains trapped in a long, painful wait for answers and closure.
His sister, Lee Lan, said she is desperate for justice as their father is ageing and in declining health, and she hopes he can witness the truth come to light in his lifetime.
Lee Lan said their father, Leong Hwee, 77, has suffered two strokes in recent years and is now unable to walk, with his speech also impaired.
“This is why I’m in a hurry to get the answers - we want him to see it happen while he is still alive.
“He’s had two strokes, the second one more severe, and now he can’t walk... his speech is unclear, and he has quite severe dementia. He often doesn’t recognise me anymore.
“Just before the MCO (movement control order lockdown), he also had a serious illness, but thankfully it is now under control,” Lee Lan told Malaysiakini on a Chinese-language podcast.
The episode, which also featured Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement chairperson Ng Yap Hwa as a guest, was released last night on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.
‘When will answer come?’
According to Lee Lan, when the family met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya last August, their mother, Teng Shuw Hoi, 72, asked him directly: “When will there finally be an answer?

According to Lee Lan, when the family met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya last August, their mother, Teng Shuw Hoi, 72, asked him directly: “When will there finally be an answer?

“My mother told the prime minister that my father could once walk and stand normally, but now has to come in a wheelchair just to see him. She asked, ‘Datuk Seri, when do you think this investigation will end? When will you give us an answer?’
“Anwar replied that he could not guarantee that the probe would be completed within a month or two, but promised it would not take more than a year or two,” she recalled.
Following the meeting, Anwar issued a statement pledging to reopen the investigation fairly and transparently, without interference from any party, and stating that “in particular, it will consider the Court of Appeal’s views on this case on Sept 5, 2014.”
Lee Lan said they chose, back then, to “try to trust” Anwar’s promise.
However, on May 20, the police’s Criminal Investigation Department wrote to the Teoh family’s lawyer to inform them of the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ “no further action” (NFA) decision.
‘Why NFA?’
Lee Lan, a mother of three, said her mother remains relatively healthy but has been deeply upset since learning of the AGC’s decision, and now blames Beng Hock’s former boss, Ean Yong Hian Wah, at home every day.

“My mother wants to ask them, ‘Where are the promised answers?’ She wants me to ask Harapan, the prime minister, DAP, and Lim Kit Siang at a press conference: ‘Where did your promise of answers go? Why is it now NFA?’
“To be honest, what I really want to ask is this: to all those in Harapan who once stood by our side, why have you changed?”
At this point, Lee Lan could not hold back her tears.
On Tuesday, she also condemned Ean Yong on Facebook for his continued silence over the AGC’s NFA decision.
Ean Yong declined to comment when contacted, saying he fully supports the DAP central executive committee’s statement on June 8, which called on the AGC to review its decision on discontinuing investigations into Beng Hock’s death.
Getting slapped twice
In the podcast, Lee Lan also shared updates about Beng Hock’s widow, Soh Cher Wei, and their son, Teoh Er Jia.
“Er Jia and Cher Wei live in Batu Pahat. During festivals or Beng Hock’s anniversary and Qing Ming, they come to Malacca to be with us,” she said.
According to Lee Lan, Er Jia has learned about his father’s case through friends and online information.

She also said that during the family’s meeting with the prime minister last August, Er Jia himself asked to attend.
“It was the first time I saw him so eager to know the progress of his father’s case,” she said.
Lee Lan added that although Soh accompanied Er Jia to Putrajaya that day, she chose not to go in to meet Anwar.
“She knew that we had met so many ministers, deputy ministers and MPs, but still couldn’t get an appointment with the prime minister. It was only after the altercation outside Parliament that he finally agreed to see us.
“She said it was obvious he never really wanted to meet us. She felt it was like back then when we had pinned our hopes on the Royal Commission of Inquiry, only to be slapped in the face. So why should we offer our face again to be slapped twice?”

In the same podcast, Ng noted that Harapan and DAP had once championed their cause when they were in the opposition, and the movement had appreciated their past support.

However, now that the coalition is in power, he stressed that they must play their role within the system and deliver justice to the Teoh family.
In 2009, Beng Hock, an aide to Ean Yong, then Selangor state executive councillor, was found dead after overnight questioning at Selangor MACC, which was then headquartered at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.
A 2011 RCI ruled he was driven to suicide due to aggressive interrogation.
However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled his death was caused or accelerated by unlawful acts, including those of MACC officers.
