Summary
- The Umno supreme council may deliberate lifting Hishammuddin Hussein’s suspension during its Monday (June 30) meeting if the issue is raised.
- Supreme council member Ahmad Maslan stresses that any decision must follow due process, and that only the council can overturn its own decision.
An Umno supreme council meeting on Monday (June 30) might discuss the issue of former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein’s suspension if the matter is raised.
Party supreme council member Ahmad Maslan affirmed that if the matter is raised during the meeting, which is expected to be held at night, it will be deliberated.
He noted that while he is neither opposed nor supportive of the proposal by the party’s Sembrong division seeking to lift Hishammuddin’s (above) suspension, any potential action must adhere to proper procedures.
“The original decision to suspend him was made by the Umno supreme council, so any further decision must also come through the council. So, let’s wait for Monday,” he said as quoted by New Straits Times.
He was speaking during a press conference after an event in Bachok, Kelantan, today.
“Of course, the matter will be discussed if the Johor Umno chairperson raises it.”

Earlier this week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party’s supreme council could consider lifting Hishammuddin’s suspension even though there was no appeal letter from the Sembrong MP.
He also reminded that the supreme council will not suspend or sack any member unless it determines a fault.
Without naming anyone, Zahid said “an individual” had committed three mistakes in Umno, which warranted a punishment.
One of the alleged mistakes was convincing 10 BN MPs to sign statutory declarations supporting Perikatan Nasional after the last general election.
Hishammuddin was slapped with a six-year suspension by Zahid in January 2023. Also suspended was former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, while former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor Umno chief Nor Omar received the boot.
