PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader has come under fire for speculating on the emergence of a “first Malaysian Chinese prime minister” in the next 30-40 years following the recent promotion of Malaysian Chinese major general Johnny Lim in the armed forces.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad yesterday shared a scenario where the country’s 50th prime minister in 2058 is a Chinese individual born in Kampung Sungai Baru.

PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim described the post by Zaharudin as “very malicious”.

“Something that should be a source of pride (Johnny’s promotion) has been twisted into a narrative that incites hostility and hatred,” he said in a post on X.

He said Islam has never promoted such views, adding that the prejudice displayed “reveals the narrow-mindedness and shallowness of some among us”, with the aim of stoking racial sentiment and spreading hate.

“Iblis was cursed because he believed fire was superior to clay — out of arrogance and pride.

“Likewise, we must never assume we are superior to others simply because we were born Malay and Muslim,” Kamil added.

Meanwhile, DAP MP Lim Guan Eng called on the authorities to take action against Zaharudin for allegedly inciting racial tensions with his post.

“The politics of hate and intolerance propagated by PAS is becoming increasingly extreme, fanatical and racially charged.

“This dangerous mindset must be stopped and cannot be allowed to continue unchecked,” he said in a Facebook post.

Guan Eng, a former finance minister, said that firm and appropriate action is needed to address such irresponsible and divisive narratives.

Zaharudin, in his post, had included a screenshot of a news report about Johnny’s promotion to the rank of lieutenant-general, making him the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to attain the three-star rank.

Zaharudin said the idea of a Chinese prime minister in Malaysia 30 to 40 years from now is not impossible.

He, however, claimed that the screenshot of the news report was only for illustration purposes.

The armed forces, in a statement on Johnny’s promotion, said it highlighted that the opportunities within the army are accessible and grounded in merit and service excellence.
