Summary

  • The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will inspect all lands under its control within the next month to ensure there is no encroachment.

  • This is after two temples were found illegally encroaching on land meant for a mosque in Dengkil.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) said it will inspect all lands under its control within the next month to ensure there has been no encroachment.

This was after two temples were found illegally encroaching on land meant for a mosque in Dengkil, said the religious authority in a statement today.

“Jais will continue to ensure there is no encroachment of any land under its control and will take appropriate action if it occurs,” it added.

The department said it will work with the land and district office as well as local authorities over this.

Yesterday, the issue of the two temples in Dengkil was resolved peacefully after a discussion between Jais and those responsible for the encroachment.

The temples agreed to leave the area after the discussion.

During Jais’ visit, it found that a Hindu temple and a small Chinese temple were built on the land gazetted as the site of the new Dengkil mosque.

Dengkil state assembly coordinator Noorazli Said confirmed that the temples were willing to leave the site and clear the area of any construction.

The land and its occupants

Meanwhile, in Jais’ statement today, it explained that the parties on the site were relocated from Ladang Galloway after the government acquired land to develop Cyberjaya.

It said the Sepang District and Land Office provided new settlements on Sungai Langat reserve land for those affected, who were also granted temporary occupancy status.

But in 2007, the Selangor government ordered the land to be vacated for the construction of a mosque and those affected had sought compensation.

“In 2011, the state government gazetted 10 acres of land to build a mosque and part of the land was Sungai Langat reserve land which was cultivated by individuals/parties involved without removing the individuals/parties occupying the land,” Jais said.

It then considered the land to be vacant but in 2014, it detected activity and construction on the site.

In a letter dated Sept 10, 2024, Jais said it requested the Sepang Land and District Office to take lawful enforcement action to vacate the site.

“However, Jais admits that no follow-up action has been taken by the Land and District Office over the letter from Jais,” it said.

The department added that it will ensure the land is vacated over the next month.

It requested that those aware of any encroachment on Jais land to contact either the state religious authority, the district Islamic office, or the Jais enforcement hotline at 1-800-88-2424.

  1. The question should be which come first.

The religious sites or the granting of that occupied land for mosque!
