Zaid Ibrahim said if PAS wishes to be able to lead the country, it must be willing to come down hard on corrupt civil servants.

PETALING JAYA
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has poured cold water on a PAS leader’s assertion that the party is better qualified to lead Perikatan Nasional, saying it will struggle to garner nationwide support.

Zaid said many leaders are qualified to be the “poster boy” for PN, but the critical thing is who is “most acceptable to most people in the country”.

“Many PAS leaders are qualified, but are they suitable and winnable? The answer is no, no, no,” the former Kota Bharu MP said in a post on X.

He said PAS is a party that attracts only Malays in Perak, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu and has no support elsewhere.

“So it’s pointless for PAS to dream of (having their leaders) becoming prime minister,” he said.

Earlier, PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin claimed that the party was better qualified to lead PN, challenging the notion that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin should remain as the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate.

Hashim cited the party’s larger parliamentary representation and stronger grassroots network nationwide as key reasons for its leadership aspirations.

PAS holds the lion’s share of the opposition seats in the Dewan Rakyat at 43 – 18 more than its coalition ally Bersatu.

Bersatu won 31 seats in the 2022 general election but was left with 25 after terminating the memberships of six MPs who declared their support for Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

Zaid said if PAS wishes to be able to lead the country, it must be willing to come down hard on corrupt civil servants.

“The person who deserves support as prime minister is the one who is willing to deal with real corruption, not the corruption perception index,” he said.

He said he expected PAS to only go after “soft targets” like cracking down on operators of 4D outlets, massage parlours, issues surrounding alcohol, and Chinese pork shops.

“The country has too many political eunuchs, which prevents us from reducing corruption. We have jihad on khalwat but not on corrupt administrators,” he said.
