PETALING JAYA: A 41-year-old woman was charged today with causing grievous hurt to Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah during a National Day parade in Ipoh.

Nurhaswani Afni Zorki was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code with committing the offence at Dewan Bandaraya Ipoh at about 8.20am on Aug 31.

She nodded when the charge was read out to her at the magistrates’ court in Ipoh but did not enter a plea, Berita Harian reported.

Deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul said no plea would be entered as an early finding by Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta showed that Nurhaswani suffered from schizophrenia.

The prosecution also said that Nurhaswani needed a further medical evaluation of her mental state to determine if she is fit for trial.

Her lawyer, M Saravanan, did not object.

Magistrate Harith Mazlan allowed the request and ordered Nurhaswani to undergo further psychiatric checks.

She will remain under hospital care during this time, with no bail offered.

The case was set for mention on Oct 8.
