Penang govt the ‘loser’ in
tunnel project, witness tells
Guan Eng’s trial
Businessman Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli says his company received ‘full payment’ despite not fulfilling its obligation to deliver the tunnel’s detailed design.

Businessman Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli told the sessions court that his company received full payment from the state in the form of a land swap, despite failing to fulfil its obligation to deliver a detailed design of the tunnel.
“Until today, the detailed design is not complete,” he said.
Zarul also told the court he had no reason to bear any grudges towards Lim, saying his company did not suffer any losses from its participation in the bidding process.
“I was thankful to YB Lim and some state government officers who had assisted me,” he said.
Zarul also told the court that only his company attended meetings with state government officers during the tunnel’s planning stage, adding that doing so placed it in a better position to bid for the job.
Lim is charged with using his position as then Penang chief minister to ask Zarul for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from the businessman.
He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.
The hearing continues before judge Azura Alwi on May 14.
Earlier today, Lim’s lawyer Haijan Omar informed the court that the former intended to travel to China from May 5 to 13 and would be seeking the temporary release of his passport.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the prosecution would not object to the request.
Azura told the defence to file a formal application with the necessary details for the court’s consideration.
Lim GE is likely to be convicted.
