Malaysia seeks to boost semiconductor industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is looking to attract more high-quality investments in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, particularly in the front end of the supply chain, which includes integrated circuit design, wafer fabrication and equipment manufacturing.
Deputy international trade and industry minister Liew Chin Tong said the electrical and electronics industry contributed significantly to the country’s economic growth, adding that it was the cornerstone of Malaysia’s manufacturing sector.
Liew said the industry accounted for 7.2% of Malaysia’s gross domestic product and around 40% of exported manufactured goods.
“Semiconductor manufacturing is the most significant segment of this industry.
“Our ultimate goal is to generate high-skill employment opportunities that offer better pay for the Malaysian talent pool,” he said.
The move comes as the semiconductor industry is seeing a global shortage of chips, which has led to supply chain disruptions and delays in the production of goods such as cars, smartphones and other electronic devices.
The shortage is also raising concern about the long-term competitiveness of countries that are dependent on imported semiconductors.
