Just a year later, in 2015, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang shook hands with Rohaizad Yaakob, a top Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) official to show the opposition’s solidarity with the MACC (at whose building Teoh BH "died" mysteriously)
Eleven years ago, Teoh Beng Hock presented himself at the Selangor MACC headquarters, on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, to assist investigations but was found dead the morning after under very suspicious circumstances.
An inquest led to an open verdict, while a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) ruled that Beng Hock committed suicide by jumping to his death, following aggressive questioning by three MACC officers.
Making matters worse for the family, the trio identified by the RCI ended up getting promoted.
During a memorial service for Beng Hock last night, held online via video conferencing for the first time ever, his younger sister Lee Lan (photo, above) described their family's quest for justice as a never-ending nightmare.
"These 11 years, (we've had the) BN, Pakatan Harapan, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) government. It feels like we're on a roller coaster.
"There's a disappointment, followed by hope, and then disappointment again," she told those present.
Her family initially had faith that the Harapan government would bring those responsible for her older brother's death to justice.
To their dismay, then attorney-general Tommy Thomas only recommended that the MACC officers be investigated for "wrongful confinement" and not culpable homicide.
The new PN government, said Lee Lan, was even worse for appointing Abdul Razak Musa as the new solicitor-general.
Abdul Razak (below) had made a spectacle of himself during the inquest on Beng Hock's death in 2010, by suggesting that the deceased "choked himself" with his hands.
"A civil servant who believes a person can strangle himself and utter insults against a disabled person was appointed to the second-highest office in the Attorney-General's Chambers.
"How depraved can the government be?" asked Lee Lan.
The memorial, held every year, was organised by the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy, which was set up to organise a campaign to seek justice.
This time around, the event was held online due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The trust also organised an online concert in Beng Hock's memory.
Lee Lan said although her family was no closer to seeking justice, their campaign will continue.
"If we give up now, those who can abuse their power will become more arrogant and harm others," she said.
Ng said Harapan, initially buoyed by reformists, eventually scuttled when it allowed conservative voices from within to flourish.
Among others, Ng said Harapan failed to abolish the Sedition Act 1948 and locate victims of enforced disappearance such as pastor Raymond Koh and several others.
"Oppressive policies were kept and the culture of impunity remained. The (Harapan) administration did not respect human rights and lacked accountability," Ng accused.

At the time, Harapan's home minister was Muhyiddin Yassin who is now the prime minister. Ng said Muhyiddin cannot shoulder all the blame, as the cabinet acted collectively and did not push for reforms.
KT pandai tipu again. He copy and paste ONE SENTENCE from the article as his title, then blend-in and tampal his own accusations against LKS and DAP at the very beginning, to lead us into thinking TBH's family puts all the blame on them. But of course this is not true. The original article puts blame on everyone in power since 2009. The original title says a "decade" has passed, actually it has been eleven years (TBH died July 2009), and DAP/LKS has only been in government for less than two.
ReplyDeleteKT conveniently "forgot" MCA also pledged to help TBH's family when the death first occurred. And MCA was in government (note I didn't say power ha ha ha) when the MACC officers were promoted. And MCA is in government when the senior "hanging" lawyer is made AG. Not DAP/LKS. So is KT capitalising/manipulating TBH's family suffering to propagate his personal hatred for LKS? Especially since he keeps quiet about others like MCA, who champion themselves as protectors of the Chinese, and only the Chinese. As "proof" let me "tampal" a few of my own....ha ha ha.....

MCA ministers to push for a Royal Commission over Teoh's death

MALACCA: MCA Cabinet ministers will forge a united front in the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to push for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe into the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock.
Its president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said this was the assurance given to Teoh’s grieving family when he met them at their home in Taman Seri Kelemak here last night.
“MCA ministers will make a united stand in the Cabinet to call for a Royal Commission,” he told reporters here yesterday.
Ong, who was accompanied by party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and several state party leaders, said the party had come forward to assist the family in whatever way possible on humanitarian grounds. He said the party’s decision to help the family should not be misconstrued.
“It is unfortunate that such a tragic death is being exploited by certain quarters to achieve their political aims,” he said.
Ong, who is also Transport Minister, said that MCA would help the family in several other matters, of which he said were personal in nature.
Earlier, Teoh’s family members were seen having a private talk with Ong in their home after he paid his last respects. The emotional meeting saw Ong explaining to the family members of MCA’s willingness to assist.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Five years on and yet to find an acceptable answer for his mysterious death, the family of Teoh Beng Hock turned up today in Parliament here to press Barisan Nasional (BN) ministers to fulfil their promise to bring the former DAP aide’s to justice. With tears in her eyes, Beng Hock’s sister Lee Lan doorstopped several ministers Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong as well as Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and questioned them on the lack of action despite the government’s promise in 2009 that the perpetrators would not be left unpunished.
“Wee Ka Siong said until now, MCA is still supporting us in seeking the truth and in ensuring that Beng Hock’s killers are punished,” Lee Lan told reporters here, referring to the MCA deputy president.
Lee Lan said her mother Teng Shwu Hoi—who was also present today and had gestured angrily as she spoke to Wee in Mandarin—had asked the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department if it was reasonable to tell Beng Hock to go to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office as a witness only for her son to turn up as a corpse the next day.
“No one was held responsible and in fact, one officer was even promoted,” said Lee Lan, translating her mother’s remarks to English for reporters.
