Schapelle Corby’s defence team, together with advice from the two QC’s assigned by the Australian government, has engaged high profile Indonesian criminal lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea for the appeal.
However, Hutapea, or Paris as I prefer to call him, seemed to be pursuing the political avenue in appealing to the Australian public to pressure Australian PM John Howard to request from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono a special court session in Bali for Corby, and to produce two alleged drug smugglers, who were alluded to in the hearsay evidence by John Patrick Ford, an Australian drug convict. He claimed that evidence by the duo can ameliorate Corby’s case.
If Howard fails these two tasks, Paris warned that Corby will be in dire straits - her sentence may be increased.
Paris has handily shifted the blame onto Howard if Corby’s appeal turned disastrous. Now, that’s clever preemptive strike.
