It seems in some countries which have an equine culture, bestiality occurs regularly. I wonder whether those women (and indeed men) were fascinated by Dobbin’s humongous ding-a-ling.
Well, in Australia a bestiality charge was originally laid in a northern NSW court against a woman accused of engaging in an indecent act with a horse, but has now been dropped.
But she still faces a lesser charge of behaving in an offensive manner. However, the local court has been told that it too may be withdrawn.
Police had alleged the woman to be behaving ‘offensively’ with a horse in a paddock in an Australian country town last month.
I wonder what an ‘offensive’ act in this case means? I leave it to your imagination.
The court was told that the woman would undergo a psychiatric examination before the remaining charge would be dismissed. The magistrate granted the woman a continuation of her existing bail and adjourned the matter to next month.
It’s frightening to think what people in countries that have elephants may fantasize? And don’t forget, the Japanese have a fascination with Godzilla-like creatures..

AAB - Bao Gong redux debunked!
Nearly three weeks ago I blogged on No bumiputra in Sarawak.
In that posting I highlighted that just prior to the UMNO general assembly, AAB allocated an additional 3 million ringgit per constituency for rural development. He stated the original allocation had already ran dry.
He wanted to spent an additional RM600 million in Peninsula and Sabah to top up the RM1.5 billion for rural development. However he failed to explained why the supplementary RM600 millions are just for Peninsula and Sabah, but significantly NOT Sarawak.
We all know that the RM600 million was garm-garm (exactly to a 'T') for 191 parliamentary constituencies held by UMNO MPs. There is no UMNO held seat in Sarawak.
Apart from that deliberate omission being discriminatory, has it been also a warning to Sarawakians to elect an UMNO bloke or two in the next election? What has the Sarawak CM said to the PM’s discriminatory handouts thus far?
Parliamentary opposition leader Lim Kit Siang just said what I blogged, that omitting Sarawak from the additional RM600 million has been a blatant discrimination.
Lim said the extra funds were also in contempt of both the cabinet and the Parliament, which should have been the first and final body respectively to approve the disbursement of the funds, but were left oblivious of the matter.
A case of AAB's siapa raja or sheer survival tactic (probably the latter) because a 'someone' was supposed to have turned up but didn’t due to a change of HEART! The tactic to upstaged that 'someone' went ahead nonetheless.
Lim said succinctly: “The instant allocation of RM3 million for minor contract works at the disposal of each UMNO division in the country ... in order to ‘buy’ UMNO delegate support at the UMNO general assembly is nothing less than political corruption of the worst kind.”
Lim said it was ‘sad and tragic’ that Abdullah, who had won a landslide victory in the 2004 general election on a pledge to root out corruption, would himself involved in such an act.
“This demonstrates that he has lost the ability to differentiate between public funds and political party purposes and between right and wrong.”
Prior to the 2004 general election, the MCA had touted AAB as Bao Gong. To fully appreciate the significance of comparing the Chinese magistrate to AAB, one has to be brought up as a Chinese.
Bao Gong (real name was Bao Zheng) was born in April 999 AD near Hefei City. He became a senior official of the Northern Song Dynasty. He was highly respected for his strictness in upholding justice and opposing corruption no matter how powerful the miscreant was.
Chinese view Bao's life as representing the highest standards of morality and ethics. His ideas were the very model of equality and rule of law.
The enormity of that MCA’s lie is unmitigated and has now become seriously damaging to the credibility of the MCA for ever suggesting that.

The PAS State government who had recently lifted a ban on rock music, has now OK-ed discos, with one condition, that men and women on the floor are separated.
Isn’t that just nifty for gays?
Kelantan chief minister Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said the clubs would also be banned from serving alcohol. I don’t think many people would have much problem with the absence of alcohol as I always believe we can have fun without the intoxicating brew. It’s the thought of being told what we can’t have that pisses me (and many others) off.
Nik Aziz said: "I do not see any reason to forbid them. This is because dancing is just a form of body movement."
According to Nik Aziz, who is also the spiritual advisor of PAS, the patrons must also wear attire covering designated body parts, or aurat in Malay, which means head to toe dress for women with only faces and hands showing, and between the navel and knees for men. Hmmm, you should see those male samba dancers from Rio. Women are in for a feast!
Tok Guru said: "When dancing is done with the aurat covered and there is no intermingling, everything should be okay."
Gays don’t intermingle so there is no problem for them. As the lifting of the ban on discos has been to promote tourism, Kelantan should be prepared for an invasion of gays in the same way Sydney has been flooded by gays from around the world on its annual month-long Mardi Gras festival.
And there is no limit to this brilliant move by Nik Aziz. Sydney and KB could even twin as cities friendly to gays. Or alternatively, even triple up with Sydney and Rio as The Axis of Gaiety..

I fear the 'Greeks' even bearing gifts
On Tuesday 12th December, I read a malaysiakini report about the Bangkok Post interviewing AAB. I came across the following:
Abdullah revealed in the interview which was held in Putrajaya that he had told Khairy he could not dabble in both politics and business at the same time.
“Khairy studied economic philosophy at Oxford. He was going to work in Hong Kong but it was too far away. Then he decided to go to Singapore. By that time, he was already in Umno Youth,” Abdullah said of his son-in-law, who is married to his only daughter, Nori.
“I posed him a question: 'Are you going into politics or are you going into business?' You cannot do both together, especially if you are going to operate in Singapore. That was the time when he was offered to join ECM Libra. That was the time they made all sorts of news about him.
Early I had read that a well-known politician from a nearby country stating relationship with Malaysia has improved since AAB took over. Isn't that just exciting?
During the period when the Grand Ole Man attacked AAB, or when AAB was under pressure, I had also read various news reports, journalistic opinions and statements by poiliticians, emanating from a nearby country, which seemed to serve (coincidentally of course) to ‘protect’ or ameliorate AAB's position .
Then I stumbled upon an old book that had this quotation:
Equo ne credite, Teucri
Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes
meaning:
Do not trust the Horse, Trojans
Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even bearing gifts
The book, about the Trojan War, explained that it was Laocoon, high priest of Troy who uttered that dire warning about accepting the poisonous gift of the Wooden Horse left behind by the Greeks who pretended to leave for Greece after decades of stalemated war. I am sure we all know what happened to Troy.

Lucky us – our dear government has added on to our challenges in life by announcing, in malaysiakini’s words, a whooping increase in toll rates of between 20 to 60% along five major highways in the Klang Valley. The increases have been on top of other demands on our pockets.
The best two statements from outraged consumer groups are:
(1) PC Yeoh, president, United Subang Jaya Residents Association (USJRA)
I have lost faith in the government. The two things I cannot tolerate are that the government signed concessionaire agreements where consumers lose both ways and that the government is not open about the contractual terms.
The highways’ traffic growth has also grown beyond their computations. The highway concessionaires should be able to cover any maintenance costs without increasing the toll rates.
There is no real competition in highway construction too. When the contracts are awarded, there is no check against people whacking up the prices.
If it continues at this rate, the government has signed very stupid agreements. They are not taking in the interests of the consumer.
The government has promoted the use of public transport, but they should make sure everything is in place first, so we can leave our cars behind. It’s a Catch-22 situation for residents here. I use my car because the public transport here is not reliable. We have had to deal with high petrol costs since early this year and now you slap us with this increase in toll rates. We lose either way.
(2) Dr Jacob George, president and legal adviser, Consumer Association of Subang and Shah Alam (Cassa)
The nightmare begins. We will see a snowballing effect on the prices of goods and services where private agencies affected by the toll hike will pass on their costs to consumers.
It confirms the fears of all consumers that the secret contractual agreements between the government and the highway concessionaires have been totally one-sided. The increase has been dictated to consumers without their interests being taken into consideration.
The hike also clearly shows that the government is not practising what it preaches. The government has told enterprises not to increase prices, but they do the same themselves.
It once again raises a lot of questions on the need for transparency in terms of the government’s contractual agreements.
This is becoming a comedy of errors. The government is allowing the fat cats, the highway concessionaires, who until today have not done any service to the nation, to get away with this.
The two statements referred without fail to the cosy contractual arrangements with the concessionaires, shrouded in secrecy as in the case of the disgraceful dodgy deal with the water body Sybas. The government is totally non-transparent and unaccountable.

I am, we are "stupid, screwed sucker(s)"
RM11 billions down the drain in 7 privatisation bailouts and the government thinks it's worth it!
I am totally numbed by the idiotic imbecilic insane government response.
Water tariffs allowed to go up to reward Syabas, a private company, on the say-so of the cabinet that the supplier had saved on non-revenue water, but the audit report and ‘agreement’ between the government and the company remain TOP SECRET, away from the prying paying public’s eyes!
I am totally infuriated by the dodgy, deceitful and duplicitous lack of transparency and accountability.
RM600 million assigned for bumiputra contractors but only in UMNO constituencies in Peninsula Malaysia and Sabah, with none in Sarawak – could it be there isn’t any bumi in Sarawak?
I am totally appalled by the pathetic, preferential pork-barrelling of the UMNO-dominated cabinet.
Road tolls like water tariffs are set to rise - still very hush-hush. Media “told” to play down this soon-to-be reward by government … not for you public of course. Suckers don’t get rewarded, only sycophants do.
I am left speechless (in a manner of … er … speaking) by the inexplicable, insensitive and incredulous double-barrelled action – raise tolls and shut the media up (or assign them ‘spinning’ jobs!).
Don't mind KTemoc - as it's Thursday it's just Vocabulary Day, a day for a litttle exercising of my rather weak command of the ang-mor vocab.

AAB & SIL's pot of rice
OK, all good things must come to an end, and so does my defence of AAB, though I still maintain my stand for him in the matter of the Monsoon Cup.
Poor (or pathetic?) AAB - he’s at it again, defending his (in)famous in-law. In an interview with the Bangkok Post he tetchily defended his SIL, alas, to the power of n, by accusing Dr Mahathir of smashing Khairy's ‘pot of rice’.
Hmmm, shouldn't the expression be 'bowl of rice' or ‘rice bowl’? Does the reference to a 'pot' indicate a frightening philosophy of 'think bigger'?
Obviously AAB was responding to the Thai newspaper’s query on the stoush between his family and Dr Mahathir’s. Oh, BTW, the latest score is "Khairy up in UMNO Youth - Mukhriz humiliated" with Hishamuddin Tun Hussein as the referee.
Now, this is the part where I think AAB lives in ga-ga-land because he told the Bangkok Post: “That's something about which I am very sad. He [meaning Khairy] has sold his interest in ECM Libra. Sold it at a loss. Now he has some debts to settle.”
Just a quick recap - SIL had borrowed RM9.2 million to purchase a stake in ECM Libra. But when Dr Mahathir raised the issue of nepotism and corruption in AAB’s family, young Khairy offloaded both his shares and his diversionary but vicious bile at the damn sneaky Chinese community - for agama dan bangsa of course where no apology for racist insult would ever be necessary.
Other than SIL's loss and his broken 'pot of rice', AAB doesn’t even seem concerned that his SIL, just 31-years old and without any visible collateral, was able to borrow a humongous sum in the millions to buy the ECM Libra shares. Which ordinary Malay in Malaysia could have secured such a uniquely generous loan?
And then, even more dodgy, less than a month after SIL’s direct stake in ECM Libra with the help of inexplicable loans from some heaven-sent-come generous businessmen, the AAB government approved a merger between the company and government-owned financial services company Avenue Capital Resources Berhad, where we were then 'blessed' with a new entity known as ECM Libra Avenue.
Has AAB been completely oblivious to SIL’s strange loan and the government approval of the merger between a company where SIL had a stake (through that loan) with a government owned financial service? Don't forget, AAB is afterall the finance minister who oversees government-linked companies, including Avenue Capital Resources Berhad.
Hasn’t he heard of the issue of conflict of interest? Or, has his world famous 'elegant silence' been an outcome of his inelegant blindness and deafness?
Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, he indulged his SIL in the most questionable venture, the proposed ‘cemerlang-isation’ of the Mat Rempits, a band of lawless social misfits, basically thugs, that Putera UMNO has been attempting to recruit as its scary praetorian guards.
We have the PM of Malaysia, the highest political office of the nation, agreeing to ‘descend down’ to the gutter-level of the hoodlums to honour them!
Now, tell me, if that hasn’t been a stark example of AAB’s blind indulgence of his SIL, what then is?

Mat Cemerlangs - a dubious (and indeed utterly idiotic) title which those thugs would have honoured with by the PM of Malaysia last month if not for their own implosion leading to the postponement. Since then we hear of those Mat Cemerlangs continuing their lawless pursuits including assaulting some policemen, with their latest crimes revealed by Raja Bodek yesterday, that 2 groups of such orang Cemerlangs had gone on a robbing spree in Seberang Prai.

Raja Bodek said the Cemerlang problem should be (why not 'must be'?) nipped in the bud, or the State’s efforts to woo tourists, especially for the Visit Malaysia Year 2007, would be negated - an F-word would have been appropriate here, but I am on an 'obscene' diet.

to what’s going on.

President Carter on Israeli Supremacist Racism

We know that Israel has been among the most, if not the most racist country in the world.
For non-Muslims, please pause for one moment before rushing blindly to defend the ‘Hebrews’, based on either Christian conviction that Hebrews must ‘walk the Holy Land’ for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, or our dislike of all Muslims (thus including Palestinians, though there are Christian Palestinians and Arabs) principally because of our personal sense of being discriminated by Muslim UMNO-government officialdom.
Our grievances with the racist policies of UMNO or the religiously oppressive laws of PAS state government should not be allowed to blind us to the oppression of Palestinians by a racist regime, Israel!

Yes, the Israelis are confining the Palestinians in ghettos in the same manner as the Nazis did to their European kinfolk during the WWII period.
The numerous Israeli military checkpoints dotted across the West Bank and Gaza are meant not only for control of movements but to serve as ‘humiliation’ points for the Palestinians.
In a TV documentary, I saw Israeli human rights groups complaining about how Palestinian farmers would be made to stand for hours with their perishable produce at those points, in an inhumane exercise to humiliate them and possibly to damage their goods. But when the Israeli human rights activities approached the points, the flow of traffic would suddenly speed up.
In the expected storm of American Jewish protests against the use of the term ‘apartheid’, President Carter said he stands by his use of that word, citing the fences, electric sensors and concrete slabs that Israel has built in the West Bank as an example of the divide.
He said: "I think it's worse, in many ways, than apartheid in South Africa."

Indeed I question the 2-year survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research involving a sampling of some 1,200 men in India which found that condoms made according to international sizes are too large for a majority of Indian men.
Yes, I realise that you are depressed because the study found more than half of the men measured had penises that were shorter than international standards for condoms. Hey, cheer up Bai, the other 50% are still OK and could well be still ... er ... maharaja-ish!

Why I defend AAB?
In my previous posting Sinister attack on AAB re Monsoon Cup dinner I lamented that AAB has beem unjustifiably attacked for an innocent platonic gesture at a dinner held in conjunction with the Monsoon Cup.
The picture showed him standing behind a seated Michelle Yeoh, in open view of humdreds if not thousands of diners, probably saying (a plausible guess-timate) “Apa khabar, Datuk Michelle?” or greetings to that effect.
Just flash bck to what one reader said of me (words to this effect) “Every day I get to read KTemoc and RPK attacking AAB.” Now, that’s my political credentials so quite frankly I find it ironical and amusing yet determined to defend AAB on this issue, because some readers are adamant that AAB has committed a grave act that’s haram (not kosher).
As I said, KTemoc is not into that sort of game where I blast politicians on every innocent reflexive gestures they make, like picking his/her nose.
Additionally I believe AAB as the PM for all Malaysians, meaning all races (not that his performance in this field thus far has been encouraging), shoud be encouraged to interact with non-Muslims without behaving like the late Ayatollah Khomeini, Rabbi Ovidia of the Shas Party of Israel, the Mufti of Perak or even Nik Aziz of PAS.
Incidentally, for Pak Haji Nik, rather than allow his party to impose draconian dress laws that penalised women, Pak Haji should look into the issue of Kelantanese being the nation’s top surfers of pornographic websites. That’s where the male lusts lie, with the males’ ... whatever.
There is a time and place for demonstration of religious piety, though religious piety should always be in one’s heart – not the difference between ‘demonstrations of' versus ‘innate’ or sincere religious piety?
I may not be a Muslim but as a Malaysian I have a right to comment on Malaysian matters. Let me say this, regardless of whatever religion one follows, one should apply the higher teachings of the religion, like compassion, love, justice, care, welfare, charity, etc rather than focusing on peripheral issues like what the CCTV operator of the Penang Council did, zooming in on Melissa Darylene Chow’s thighs for a solid 15 minutes, instead of keeping his attention on the general security of the room.
That’s what this case of AAB’s innocent or even fatherly gesture has been spinned into. It's sinister and repulsive. It's like President Bush's people fabricating the terrible lie that a married John McCain had an illicit child from an amorous tryst with an African American when the truth has been McCain adopting a Bangla Deshi girl.
Who are the parties who want to inflate this issue into a Ben Hur-ish scandal? Are their motives of Islamic piety? Or, just grubby politics, misusing and indeed abusing the noble aspects of the religion for their personal benefits?

Sinister attack on AAB re Monsoon Cup dinner
There is a bit of unjustified attack on AAB for doing 'something' at a dinner held in conjunction with the Monsoon Cup. The picture showed him standing behind a seated Michelle Yeoh. I have the picture but I won't post it.
I don't support the unfortunate attempts to use the picture to implicate him as ... whatever.
KTemoc is not into that sort of game where I reckon AAB made an innocent platonic gesture. As all of you know, I have been ripping into AAB regularly but more for his non action or bad decisions as a PM. I am not interested in finding out whether he picked his nose and didn't wash his hands.
But I am very interested in his governance (or lack of) in public matters, in his role as PM and his conduct as the president of UMNO. Disregard his innocent gestures - it has no bearing on us citizens and our lives.
The former (governance) will f**k us up, while the latter (his innocent gestures) won't. So let's focus on AAB's performance on his leadership and management of our country.

KTemoc is not into that sort of game where I reckon AAB made an innocent platonic gesture. As all of you know, I have been ripping into AAB regularly but more for his non action or bad decisions as a PM. I am not interested in finding out whether he picked his nose and didn't wash his hands.
But I am very interested in his governance (or lack of) in public matters, in his role as PM and his conduct as the president of UMNO. Disregard his innocent gestures - it has no bearing on us citizens and our lives.
The former (governance) will f**k us up, while the latter (his innocent gestures) won't. So let's focus on AAB's performance on his leadership and management of our country.

Raja, thou doth protest too much!
Raja Petra Kamaruddin, editor of political website Malaysia Today claimed rival UMNO politicians have been providing him with juicy scandalous insider titbits.
Speaking at a media forum organised by the Asian Institute for Development Communication (Aidcom) in Kuala Lumpur, he said “We are perceived as an opposition website, despite the fact that we have been fighting the opposition. But you would be surprised, the bulk of our readers are actually from UMNO. The bulk of information we get is from UMNO.”
He disclaimed his blog as being aligned with the opposition: “As an opposition aligned website, it’s impossible to get that information.”
Raja Petra said Malaysia Today had benefited from the infighting in UMNO and competition among its members.
He explained: “I mean, if you are president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, so what. How far do you go? But if you are president of Umno, you become prime minister, so everyone wants to be president of Umno. So in that sense, there is a need to topple and sabotage each other. So those in the ruling party use us (Malaysia Today) as prostitutes, if you wish.”
“They give us information, because so and so wants to smear the other guy, so he can topple the other guy, so the other guy can topple the other guy. Everybody gives us information because everybody wants to topple everybody. This is how we get information.”
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Raja Petra in person, yet, though as a keen fan of his writing I gather he is a very witty, disarming ["use us (Malaysia Today) as prostitutes"], charming and definitely an eloquent person.
But I have said this of Raja Petra before and I say it again. I opine he is an ardent supporter of Anwar Ibrahim. Mind you, I observe from his writing that Raja Petra has sometimes changed ‘tactics’ to seemingly attack Anwar, very much to the consternation of the Anwaristas.
But I reckon that has been an indication of his clever and flexible ability to ‘modify’ his campaign for Anwar from dedicated devoted defence into a discerning diffused disguise, obliquely supporting Anwar in a sort of back-handed reverse-psychological kind of way.
It is a tribute to his (Raja Petra's) brilliance.
Even when he praised or support Mahathir, cynical KTemoc would be looking for the Anwar angle – just bloody suspicious me, that’s all ;-)
In June last year, Jeff Ooi of Screenshots triggered off something that riled Raja Petra so much that he removed the Screenshots link off his blog list. From very reliable source he was at war (whatever form that took) with Jeff Ooi.
But I see the Screenshots link back on Malaysia-Today which means they must have kissed and made up – I must asked Jeff about this.
Now, the reason for his (previous) anger with Jeff and my suspicion that Raja Petra is pro-Anwar seem to converged in the following old BolehTalk postings:
(1) Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White, which was the start of the Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White Chronicles, where one of Jeff Ooi’s posting sent Raja Petra ballistic.
(2) Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White (2). Here Raja Petra believed that Jeff Ooi was part of a conspiracy to Get Anwar.
Not only that, he talked about PKR becoming the super mega duper party once Anwar Ibrahim returned from overseas (after his release). He also accused the Young Turks of PAS.
(3) Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White (3). In this one, I quoted him saying: "To thwart this move they [meaning UMNO and some PAS leaders] are resurrecting an old allegation that Anwar has stashed RM3 billion in 20 offshore bank accounts. If they can ‘prove’ this then Anwar would be seen as no better than those he is accusing of corruption, nepotism and cronyism.”
(4) Raja Petra's Gula Melaka for us where I wrote: “The sh*t has really hit the fan over at Malaysia-Today, with Raja Petra Kamaruddin attacking Jeff Ooi ad hominem.”
Additionally I commented on a Raja Petra article that said Jeff Ooi and a certain Alex Ong collaborated to sucker PAS strongman Husam Musa into political suicide.
(5) Australian TV Programme in 2003 - Anwar Ibrahim & IIIT, where I picked up from a Raja Petra article, allowing us to learn of Anwar’s lawyer declaring an intention to sue SBS, the Australian TV station that aired a story of Anwar’s link with a terrorist group through an Islamic think-tank that he was a director of.
(6) People Intimate with the Anwar Ibrahim-CIBT Nexus - just a KTemoc advice to spammers of the Chronicles to try their luck at Malaysia-Today.
(7) Is PAS a Siamese Twin or Millstone for PKR?, where I commented on another Raja Petra article about the relationship between PAS and PKR.

KTemoc asks PM same questions again
In June 2005 Malaysiakini published my letter which I also posted in my other blogsite BolehTalk as Questions! Questions! Questions!
Given recent events I feel it may be now opportune to republish the letter here at KTemoc Konsiders. Here goes:
When Isa Samad was deposed for his money politics, and the AP scandal revealed to Rafidah Aziz's embarrassment (or to embarrass Rafidah Aziz?), there was great excitement that finally the prime minister has made his move towards a more democratic, accountable and transparent Malaysia.
My friends, I caution that one swallow does not a summer make. It's just the usual Umno 'war games' except in their case, there is no such thing as notional enemies. Let us ask a few pertinent questions.
Has the issue of the AP been resolved to a satisfactory status, where its award will be governed by transparent rules and publicly gazetted process and procedures?
Has the police force been sorted out for its notorious corruption and unaccountable exercise of power? Has the cases of death in police custody been investigated to the public's satisfaction? What about the Police Commission's recommendations? Will any police heads roll on the principle of public accountability?
Will the police be made to investigate information about corruption rather than harass the whistle blower like Raja Petra Kamarudin of MalaysiaToday blog?
Will politicians who unscrupulously exploit ethnic issues be legally slapped down, or if they are parliamentarians, be expelled from sessions? We aren't talking about only DAP or MIC politicians - in fact we refer specifically to Umno members.
Will the prime minister stop - in no uncertain terms - public expressions of racist sentiments by his own ministers and party leaders?
When it comes to public monies or property, will the prime minister educate his party members to distinguish between political party and the elected government? Will the government implement policies based on proper governance in accordance with universal good practices such as legality, accountability, transparency, meritocracy and genuine consultative process with the people of Malaysia?
Can we have fewer slogans and politically-motivated gimmicks and more substance in ministerial and public service performance? Will the prime minister remind his ministers and public service including the police that they are beholden and answerable to the Malaysian people, not to local barons, counts or warlords?
Will the education system be corrected to have one uniform standard for all Malaysians? Will criteria for university entrance be made transparent together with scholarships awarded on the basis of merit?
Will our authorities stop social engineering - engineering to the extent that they would be prepared to even neutralise private efforts to gain professional qualifications by Malaysian students who have been marginalised from Malaysia's higher education system, as in the case of the de-recognition of the Crimea State Medical University?
Can we have programmes of 'towering Malaysians' rather than just 'towering Malays'? Will the prime minister revamp government affirmative actions to be based on real needs, and not on ethnicity?
Can we be guaranteed that every Malaysian will be treated equally, as is their right? Can we have a law ruling that anyone who questions the right of a Malaysian to be a Malaysian is guilty of a seditious crime?

Terengganu award to reward polygamists?
It was reported that on Thursday, Wan Mohamed Wan Hassan, a state executive councillor of Terengganu and also Community Development and Women's Affairs Committee chairman, told the Terengganu state assembly the state government would be giving special awards to married man who are willing to take single mothers as their second or third wives to ease their (the women’s of course, and not the polygamists’) financial burden.
He told the assembly that the special award was a token of appreciation for these men.
I understand from a Muslim mate that the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) started the 4-wives permission to cater for the survival needs of war widows, unfortunate ladies whose husbands were killed in battles during the early days of the Prophet’s struggle.
I remember seeing a movie titled ‘A man called Horse”, which depicted the life of a white man (English) captured by and then, after some trials ad tribulations, adopted as a full fledged member of a Sioux tribe. In one scene, a Sioux widow, whose husband was killed in an inter-tribal battle, had to surrender all she owned and leave the tribe to die in isolation in the wilderness. Apparently that was the tribal tradition as no one wanted or could look after old her.
The Prophet (pbuh) must have foreseen such a social problem when he evolved the Islamic matrimonial formula as a social construct. The main thrust of his teaching was directed at the welfare of the war widows, and not at men’s sexual recreation. So the man assigned the duty could well be a 21-year old smart handsome looking warrior being detailed with an ugly war widow aged 55 with several children.
Some sensible variations of the 4-wives rule applied in cases when a wife could not bear a son for the husband or could not enable continued consummation of the marriage.
Other than declaring the state would be (unnecessarily) issuing special award for implementing a teaching of the Prophet (pbuh), has it been wrong the for the Terengganu Exco member to publicise the noble virtues of such a welfare scheme?
Well, the opinion of Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Women, Family and Community Development Minister, was that while the intention might be good and noble, the move would invite trouble.
She wants the Terengganu government to drop any intention to reward married men who are willing to take single mothers as additional wives.
She stated: "I was shocked to read the news in the newspapers this morning. I immediately called Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh for an explanation."
"The Menteri Besar (MB) promised to get more details on the matter for me."
She said the worrying thing is that it can be misinterpreted, in fact abused by some irresponsible men as an open cheque book for polygamist indulgence in Terengganu.
Meanwhile, MB Idris Jusoh denied that the state government was planning to give out the special award. He said so in an SMS to reporters the next day saying the newspaper reports on the matter were inaccurate.
Hmmm, do you think the newspapers report was inaccurate? Or, is it yet another UMNO (state government) manoeuvring to upstage (and out-sex) PAS for the next state election? A perverted path to be more PAS than PAS?
Though not a Muslim, I am willing to lend my support to the welfare scheme on the following conditions:
(1) There be an asset test to determine whether the wannabe polygamist husband can afford it, and treat the new or additional wives fairly and equally. I believe this is enshrined in Islamic teachings, though sometimes not applied here in Malaysia.
(2) Likewise for the ladies – they must truly need the financial support and are not just pretty faces with concealed (therefore un-emphasised but nonetheless substantial) sexy buttocks and cleavages!
(3) In keeping with the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh), there must be no ‘picking’ or ‘selection’ by the wannabe polygamist husbands. It’s supposed to be a welfare scheme and not a dating agency. If they volunteer for the scheme, the management of the scheme will assign the wives (anyone of any age) to them to be looked after with severe penalties if they reject their assigned wives.
(4) The management or Board of the scheme must be made up of people who won’t indulge (conspire) in a ‘nod & wink’ relationship with the wannabe polygamist husbands, making the welfare scheme nothing more than a cover up for the men to get the women of their lusts.
I am willing to volunteer if needed ;-)

AAB wooing back the 'non'?
Just a quick summary of the Rayappan case. Bloke was a former van driver who died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital recently.
Following his demise, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) applied with the Syariah High Court to have his body buried according to Islamic rites because he had converted to Islam in 1990 with the name of Muhammad Rayappan Abdullah.
But Rayappan’s family objected on the grounds that the deceased had renounced the religion. His widow filed an application at the Civil High Court in Kuala Lumpur for her late husband's body to be released to her, claiming that Rayappan had been a Roman Catholic when he died.
Before the issue could become another Moorthy case, the PM leapt in with the backing of the cabinet, instructing the AG to look into the case and confirm Rayappan’s religious status.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz might have let the cat out of the bag on what the cabinet has in mind when he said: “It is clear he had gone back to his earlier faith, and the identity card does not state that he is a Muslim.”
And before we can say the “pussy cat, pussy cat" Mais has back-pedalled, deciding not to claim the body for burial according to Islamic rites. It filed a notice in the Shah Alam Syariah High Court on Thursday, withdrawing its claim on Rayappan's body. Its volte face is like the sun rising in the West.
In damage control (or rather 'salvage' control) mode, Mais chairman stated that all earlier information gathered before showed that Rayappan was a Muslim, but the new evidence pointing to the fact he was not a Muslim was overwhelming.
He said: "So, I hope the matter is solved and we don't think the people will view us negatively because we make the decision based on the existing facts and not emotion."
Then Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Chief Guardian of the extra king-size keris, kissed and made up with MCA Youth chief Liow Tiong Lai who said MCA Youth wing understood that Hisham’s keris waving was a symbol to show it was a trust for Hishammuddin to carry out his responsibilities to the nation. The keris is now labelled king-size but mild.

… because today Malaysiakini reported that AAB expressed his concerns over the increasingly fragile race relations in Malaysia. He appealed for next year's celebrations marking 50 years of independence to emphasise national unity.
The fact is that ordinary Chinese-Indians and Malays are OK with each other but UMNO members have been the problem. To add to the aggravated political problem, PAS has stupidly cut itself out from Chinese-Indian voters who might have wish to ‘try’ out PAS as an alternative to the ugly UMNO, when it (PAS) passed its Islamic version of how to ‘control’ sexily dressed women, including non-Muslims – by threat of fines.
I doubt any Chinese-Indian would now want to go for PAS even if UMNO still waves the keris. PAS just has to cut its nose to spite its face!
AAB described the worsening relationship between the majority Muslim Malays and the minority ethnic Chinese and Indian communities as a ‘disease’ that must be tackled openly. He needs to ask himself why it has become a disease in the first place.
As a conciliatory gesture, he pointed the finger at his own party, UMNO, which caused dismay last month with racially charged speeches from members at its annual meeting.
Abdullah called for the celebrations of half a century of independence from Britain to include all Malaysians, regardless of race.
He appealed: "If there are shortcomings let us work together to overcome them. We also don't want only a semblance of unity but with festering undercurrents on the inside."
He has also told the Malaysian media to report more on ‘feel good’ stuff instead of provocative news.
I reckon the racist comments at the recent UMNO general assembly were staged and choreographed to neutralise someone’s overpowering personality, but when that someone didn’t turn up, no one had the brains to modify the planned “siapa lebih jaguh” strategy, which then was further aggravated by innate racist emotions and some delegates’ self promotional interests.
I also reckon the PM, with the support of the cabinet, had instructed Mais to retreat from the Rayappan’ case.
AAB and the cabinet are pulling back from the brink because there may be more problems, probably economical ones or a sense that non-Malay voters would want to spite UMNO for its atrocious behaviour and insensitivity, by switching their votes over to either (an already self destructing) PAS or a very quiet PKR (probably one of the main beneficiaries besides the DAP).
I reckon also AAB may call the general election a bit earlier than the five years interval to cut off Anwar Ibrahim.
Looks like the MCA will be enlisted to resurrect AAB's pre-2004 Bao Gong image once again to woo non-Malay voters.
Following his demise, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) applied with the Syariah High Court to have his body buried according to Islamic rites because he had converted to Islam in 1990 with the name of Muhammad Rayappan Abdullah.
But Rayappan’s family objected on the grounds that the deceased had renounced the religion. His widow filed an application at the Civil High Court in Kuala Lumpur for her late husband's body to be released to her, claiming that Rayappan had been a Roman Catholic when he died.
Before the issue could become another Moorthy case, the PM leapt in with the backing of the cabinet, instructing the AG to look into the case and confirm Rayappan’s religious status.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz might have let the cat out of the bag on what the cabinet has in mind when he said: “It is clear he had gone back to his earlier faith, and the identity card does not state that he is a Muslim.”
And before we can say the “pussy cat, pussy cat" Mais has back-pedalled, deciding not to claim the body for burial according to Islamic rites. It filed a notice in the Shah Alam Syariah High Court on Thursday, withdrawing its claim on Rayappan's body. Its volte face is like the sun rising in the West.
In damage control (or rather 'salvage' control) mode, Mais chairman stated that all earlier information gathered before showed that Rayappan was a Muslim, but the new evidence pointing to the fact he was not a Muslim was overwhelming.
He said: "So, I hope the matter is solved and we don't think the people will view us negatively because we make the decision based on the existing facts and not emotion."
Then Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Chief Guardian of the extra king-size keris, kissed and made up with MCA Youth chief Liow Tiong Lai who said MCA Youth wing understood that Hisham’s keris waving was a symbol to show it was a trust for Hishammuddin to carry out his responsibilities to the nation. The keris is now labelled king-size but mild.

"Virtue" of Kelantan
OK, from Indonesian 'virgin' to Kelantanese 'virtue'.
The State of Kelantan intends to protect the 'virtue' of women, so said the State's Menteri Besar, Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat of the fundamentalist Islamic Party, PAS.
PAS which governs Kelantan has introduced fines for women working in shops and restaurants who wear clothes such as mini-skirts, see-through blouses and tight trousers (eg. jeans) which it labelled as 'sexy' outfits. Nik Aziz said: "A woman who wears an indecent outfit does not respect herself, so how can she expect men to respect her."
Wearing jeans sexy? OK, but then PAS has only targeted women, which is hardly surprising considering its record. Why not fine men in jeans too?
An Aussie woman once told me she felt 'hot' when she saw French Rugby players (in Australia), especially when those French men were off the field dressed in jeans. So I tried a "Bonjour Mademoiselle" on her but all I got back was a smile, a "cut it out, KT" and a smart pat (in fact a grope) on my bottom, which mind you, was not clad in jeans.
Remember Melissa Darylene Chow? She recently suffered the injury of having a Penang Council security staff trained his CCTV on her thighs (looking for DNA samples?) and worse, the subsequent insult of being verbally assaulted by the Council president who blamed her for overexposing her thighs. Mind you, if she was in Kelantan, she would be poorer by RM500. regardless of whether she's Muslim or not ..... which of course raises constitutional issues of whether a non-Muslim Malaysian may be penalised on Islamic rules and regulatory criteria?
Well, all I can advice Melissa is, please don’t let NST send you to KB. But spare a thought for those Muslim women in KB shops who had been fined RM50 each time they forget to wear their tudung (Islamic-Arab head covering for women).

But under the KB Municipal dress regulations, Muslim women must wear dresses which cover their ankles and a tudung which covers the hair and forehead. Hmmm, what about poverty, unemployment, justice for the poor, flood control, illiteracy, etc?
Non-Muslims aren't spared either, providing us with a glimpse of PAS' intention under an Islamic State rule it proposes. The non-Muslim women (men excused) must wear outfits which do not expose the navel, or reveal cleavage (c'mon lah, Pak Haji!) or emphasise the buttocks (emphasised? Aren't buttocks ... er ... buttocks?)

Indonesian Islamic leaders and political parties have been campaigning strongly for tougher morality laws in Indonesia, including outlawing pornography and any public displays of affection.

The porno recording, of approx. 10 minutes and believed to be filmed in 2004, shows the nude singer laying on a bed seductively, with the politician, still standing and also stark naked, approaching her. Maybe he was only going to check her skin for rashes?
The Vice-President and Golkar Party chief, Jusuf Kalla, has expressed shock (NOooo!) and announced an investigation. In true SE Asian style denial, Kalla said the facts had to be verified before determining if any action should be taken against the married politician.

Reminds me of home where in some places, priority goes to issues sexual rather than corruption or poverty.
In Indonesia Golkar is the biggest political party and the largest member of the coalition government under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The politician entrusted with heading Golkar's religious affairs committee, which has responsibility for national moral issues, is Yahya Zaini, the parliamentary secretary of Golkar.

Intellect a disadvantage in politics
Australia has a new opposition leader in Kevin Rudd. A fluent mandarin-speaking foreign affairs specialist, Rudd mounted a challenge against erstwhile Labour Party leader Kim Beazley.
Beazley was the utter frustration of the long suffering Labour Party for the last few years. While the Labour Party is the more popular political party, leading in the (fairly accurate Australian) polls against the Liberal Party, Beazley unfortunately had great difficulty getting his personal ratings above 30%, while the PM, John Howard, easily garners virtually 2/3 of the popularity rating.
Though the Labour Party is more trusted, its previous leader wasn’t, which effectively meant that it wouldn’t have much of a chance at the federal general election. In Australian federal politics, leadership personality is very very important.
Beazley came across as a nice decent bloke but was perceived as someone who lacked the gonads to sock it to others. Sometimes he was seen as wishy washy, always wanting to play safe. Aussies like strong leadership, as seen in personalities like Bob Hawk, Paul Keating, John Howard and even in opposition leaders like Mark Lathan (later found to be a loose cannon).
The Labour Party realised that it had to get rid of its Beazley millstone so it abandoned him for a comparatively young Rudd who’s only been in parliament for 8 years.
His new team mate (now the new deputy opposition leader) is Julia Gillard, an unmarried (but alas, already attached) young-ish woman. Like Rudd, she’s around her mid-40s. She’s from the left faction of the party – yes, my type of woman - leftwing, good looking, cool as a cucumber (oooh!), smart, and with a strong character.
Gillard has actually been the more popular figure, even more popular than Beazley and Rudd in a poll taken early this year, where she polled 32% compared to Beazley's 25% and Kevin Rudd's 18%.
But the odds against her becoming the party’s leader have been her affiliation with the left faction of the party, her close ties with two unpopular Labour leaders, Mark Latham and Simon Crean, and probably her gender.
Well, much as Australians like to believe they are ‘equal opportunity’ people, there is still a fairly strong bias against a woman becoming a PM. But anything is possible in the future as the views of people do change.
Both the new leaders are articulate, smart, young, good looking (at least Julia Gillard - excuse my ardent enthusiasm for her) and never with a significantly wrong word or action. They are advertising their ascendancy to the leadership of the Labour Party as a ‘generational change’ that’s needed to lead Australia into a better future, and undoubtedly with a ‘jab’ at ancient John Howard, who refuses to hand over the reins to his frustrated deputy, Peter Costello.
On the plus side for Rudd are:
(1) John Howard’s growing arrogance
(2) the government’s new horrendous Industrial Relations Law, which may see some blue collar voters returning to the Labour Party fold
(3) rising interest rates
(4) his own political ‘freshness’ with no baggage
(5) his rags to leadership life, which may capture the imagination and sympathy of the Australian voters.
(6) his intelligence
(7) his more popular deputy enhancing his stature
(8) to a very small extent, Australia’s involvement in Iraq
(9) him being a novelty to Australian voters
On the minus side for him would be:
(1) John Howards’ cunning and his powerful political machinery, which had demonstrated its nastiness, like bullsh*tting about all sorts of perils which of course ‘only’ John Howard can hold back
(2) his paling beside his more popular deputy - seemingly a confliction with (7) above under his 'plus' points, but a good looking, popular and articulate female deputy can be a double-edge sword
(3) Rudd’s own intellect (slightly different from ‘intelligence’)
The third disadvantage for Rudd, his intellect, is not unusual in politics, where voters seldom trust brainy people or those who appear to be brainy, like former Labour Senator Gareth Evans. Some brainy politicians actually go out of their way to show they aren’t brainy.
While former NSW Labour premier, Bob Carr, is undoubtedly an intellectual, he managed to mask that when he was in office, with his guts-ripping, street fighting, eyes clawing political smarts. John Howard, Paul Keating and Bob Hawk, all PMs at one stage or another, were/are political ‘street fighters’, like our Dr Mahathir and the late Dr DR Seenivasegam.
The best example of the Malaysian politician, who was an intellectual (or appear to be one), was former Home Minister* Tan Sri Ghazali Shafie, which might explain why the Malays generally didn’t want him. Pity!

Kevin Rudd needs to watch that he doesn’t get carried away by his intellect, but he may be sure the Liberal Party would go all out to show the Aussie people he’s one, who’s completely ‘out of touch with the ordinary blokes and sheilas’.
But short of that, or going bonkers, or being overtly anti-American (a no-no for wannabe PMs downunder), he could well be the next PM of Australia. While former NSW Labour premier, Bob Carr, is undoubtedly an intellectual, he managed to mask that when he was in office, with his guts-ripping, street fighting, eyes clawing political smarts. John Howard, Paul Keating and Bob Hawk, all PMs at one stage or another, were/are political ‘street fighters’, like our Dr Mahathir and the late Dr DR Seenivasegam.
The best example of the Malaysian politician, who was an intellectual (or appear to be one), was former Home Minister* Tan Sri Ghazali Shafie, which might explain why the Malays generally didn’t want him. Pity!

Kevin Rudd needs to watch that he doesn’t get carried away by his intellect, but he may be sure the Liberal Party would go all out to show the Aussie people he’s one, who’s completely ‘out of touch with the ordinary blokes and sheilas’.
But short of that, or going bonkers, or being overtly anti-American (a no-no for wannabe PMs downunder), he could well be the next PM of Australia. It would be an exceptional achievement for the young and relatively inexperienced politician, who as a little kid had to live in a volkswagen car after his father died in an accident and his family was evicted from their farmhouse.

'Crutch' rather than 'keris'
Malaysiakini Jude commented on the article Fiery speeches: 'Stern warning' for Umno three in succinct fashion.
He proposes to UMNO's Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, son of illustrious father Tun Hussein and grandson of even more illustrious and highly respected Datuk Onn Jaafar, that at next year's UMNO general assembly, Hisham should leave the keris at home and brandish a ‘crutch’ instead.
Jude reckons that the crutch will be more closer to the truth for UMNO's perpetual dependence on and virulent defence of the NEP. Jude quoted in part Abraham Lincoln's famous saying by reminding Hisham that UMNO may be able to fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.
Abraham Lincoln said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

After all those ranting, incendiary speeches, bloodbath calls and kissing of the keris, the spin doctors wanted Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to play the Big Hero role and come out telling one and all that, once again, that he is ‘PM for all Malaysians’ and that only what he says goes and will be translated into government policies.
But if he and his spindoctors think that Joe Public will be taken in again by his talk of ‘I am PM for all Malaysians’, they are obviously mistaken.
Enlightened Malaysians are obviously not going to be taken in once again like that time, long ago in the spring of 2004. Come the 12th general election, be it in 2007 or 2008 or even 2009, such talk will be shown to be the bull that it really is.
Enlightened Malaysians must then show themselves to be enlightened voters too. Then, and only then, will Pak Lah receive his big slap.
On the other hand, if at the 12th general election voters decide otherwise, then they should forever remain ‘elegantly silent’ and continue to live elegantly cowed in Umnoputra Bodohland.
