Putin holds Ukraine talks with US envoys
Both Russia and Ukraine agreed not to strike each others' capitals for three days to allow negotiations to take place.
US President Donald Trump has said his son-in-law Kushner and business ally Witkoff were bringing a “proposal” on ending fighting.
Talks ended after just over three hours, past 11pm in Moscow.
The envoys are due on Sunday in Ukraine’s capital for the first time, as Washington tries to revive US-led talks to end Europe’s worst conflict since World War Two.
Both Russia and Ukraine agreed not to strike each others’ capitals for three days to allow the negotiations to take place.
In televised comments before the closed-door talks began, Putin thanked Trump for “not stopping” to try to end the war — launched by Russia in 2022 — despite it being “not simple”.
The Russian leader has repeatedly said Moscow intends to seize the rest of east Ukraine and Washington did not say if its plan involves Kyiv ceding land.
The envoys arrived after a summer of escalation that saw a drastic rise in civilian deaths on both sides. The war has killed hundreds of thousands and forced millions of people to flee their homes.
Kyiv said Saturday that Russian strikes had killed 10 people across the country Saturday — including a child and his family members in the Kharkiv region and two people outside Kyiv.
Putin said Russia would ensure the safety of the envoys in Kyiv — a city Moscow has pounded with deadly strikes throughout the war.
“We will do everything that depends on us to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and mediators such as yourselves,” Putin told Witkoff and Kushner.
Limited truce
Putin was speaking a day after Kyiv said Moscow had struck the headquarters of its SBU security service in the centre of the city.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have said they would halt strikes on each others cities to allow for negotiations.
“The Russian president, the commander-in-chief, has given the order from midnight not to strike Kyiv for three days,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky — who had offered a truce during the US visits — later said he had spoken to the US envoys and also promised Kyiv would not strike Moscow.
“From now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow,” Zelensky said on social media.
On Saturday, Putin said he had “noted that the Ukrainian side significantly reduced” its strikes on Russia and Moscow.
Putin also said he had been informed the two US envoys would be heading to Kyiv — their first time for talks in the Ukrainian capital.
“In any case, of course, no matter what happens next, contacts of this kind are undoubtedly always beneficial,” he added.
Zelensky has said he expects the US envoys in Kyiv Sunday.
US efforts have so far not led to a breakthrough in the war — which has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.
As peace efforts stalled, in part because of Washington’s war with Iran, Moscow and Kyiv stepped up their long-range attacks.
Russian strikes
As the US envoys were in the Kremlin, Ukraine said Russian attacks had killed three members of the same family in the city of Chuguiv in the north-eastern Kharkiv region.
“As a result of this shelling, almost the entire family was killed: a 19-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy, and a 45-year-old man,”regional leader Oleg Synegubov said.
Earlier Saturday, Russia struck Kyiv’s suburbs and in the Dnipro region, where local officials said five people had been killed.
Zelensky accused Moscow of trying to disrupt the visit of the US envoys with overnight attacks on Kyiv’s two airports — as well as on the civilian targets.
This will be the first time that Witkoff and Kushner visit Kyiv since Trump returned to office last year with a pledge to resolve the conflict.
Travelling to Kyiv by plane would be a highly unusual move, as Ukrainian airspace has been closed since 2022 because of the war. Visiting leaders and officials have generally travelled there by train.
Witkoff and Kushner, who have been involved in negotiations for ceasefires in Gaza and Iran, have travelled repeatedly to Moscow in previous attempts at diplomacy.
Their visit comes after a rare trip to Moscow last month by CIA director John Ratcliffe.

ReplyDeleteIn the context of Witkoff and Kushner: they were received in the Red Drawing Room. It is prestigious, but it is not the room the Kremlin itself designates for “particularly distinguished guests.” That description is specifically reserved for the Green Drawing Room.
▪️The Green Drawing Room has a higher protocol status, particularly for heads of state and other distinguished guests.
▪️The Red Drawing Room is also ceremonial and highly prestigious, but it is used more broadly for different kinds of meetings.
P.S.: Good thing Trump never saw it. He’d be back at the White House the next morning with 500 rolls of red silk wallpaper, ready to remodel the entire place. The best red silk😂

Very interesting development indeed.
Not a coincidence that Germany tried to blame Russia for a drone found at an airport that flies weapons to Ukraine.
Then our CIA Director makes an unplanned visit to Moscow.
Then three major weapons depots Ukraine was hiding in residential neighborhoods are blown up.
Then Trump invites Russian officials to the G20 meeting in North Carolina without telling any of the European leaders.
They seem to be out of the loop completely on what’s actually happening.
Kushner, Trump’s closest and most trusted aide, then travels to Moscow and now we have a “ceasefire.”
If you think NATO and the European war mongers are angry now, just wait.

Market Report for 9-6-2026: Everything is Coming Together Now
This Labor Day weekend could become one of the most significant in recent memory.
On the heels of the G-20 meeting in Asheville where it was communicated quite clearly by the US that we are moving forward with or without Europe's "help," we are looking at Trump's chief negotiating team working hard to finally end the stupidity that is the Ukraine war.
In order to get to this point, however, as I've said for years now, you have to take the money away from Ukraine. To do that you have to take it away from their benefactors.
So, first Trump stops US money going in, then it forces the Europeans to find new and "novel" ways to support Ukraine.
To do that, however, means keeping up the flow of illicit money flowing through the US dollar-based trade system that turns into various carry trade profits to rig bond and currency markets.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been clear about his intentions, cutting off from the dollar system those that continue to support not just Iran but also Ukraine-by-proxy.
Because one was the source of the flow for the other. First you cut off the oil flow, which cuts collateral chains, and then any continued flow is choked off at the banks.
And for the first time we're seeing those banks in key geographies be shut out of the dollar. It's not just Iran or Russia anymore. Now it's Turkey, the UAE, Hong Kong, British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, the Caymans, etc.
So, with that said, now you know what was likely said behind the scenes at the G-20, and why all of a sudden we're talking peace in Kiev, Iran trying to Baghdad Bob it up over the Strait, and yen carry trades suddenly moving the other way.
All of this as we enter an eight week period of potential game-changing events at the electoral level the world over.
Even if peace doesn't break out this weekend, the message has been sent. WE SEE YOU. Now, knock this shit off, so we can get on with rebuilding a world you keep threatening to literally set on fire.

It seems that the US has prepared a proposal for Russia involving Ukraine's surrender. It would include Ukrainian loss of parts of the Donbass, Ukrainian neutrality and a limited army, among other things.
The US would be moving urgently due to two circumstances.
The first is that Russia is preparing a major autumn offensive on several Ukrainian fronts and the US wants to avoid greater territorial losses for Ukraine.
There is a possibility that Russia recovers Odesa and Ukraine becomes a landlocked country, as many of us said in 2022 just a few weeks after the start of the war, and as the map shows.
The second is a US attempt at a trade-off, temporarily satisfying Russia in Ukraine so that Russia sets aside Iran and thus the US makes some progress in its war in West Asia.
I find it hard to believe that this agreement could go forward. Zelensky cannot accept territorial losses; he should be removed from the board beforehand and someone found in the Ukrainian leadership who offers to sign a defeat that would put their life at risk.
I also find it hard to believe that in Russia they would accept that the US and NATO will respect any kind of agreement, with the entire history of decades of Western breaches, especially in the three years. Likewise, I would find it strange that Russia would give up recovering Russian cities like Odessa or Kharkov.
