JAKARTA, Sept 6 — Four more airports in Indonesia were temporarily closed today as volcanic ash from Anak Krakatoa continued to spread, further disrupting flight operations and bringing the total number of affected airports to five.

Transport Ministry Civil Aviation Director General Lukman F Laisa said the additional closures involved Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Raden Inten II Airport in Lampung, Budiarto Airport in Curug and Pondok Cabe Airfield.



“So, five airports have been closed. We continue to monitor the movement of this ash,” he said in an online press conference today.


He said the ministry was coordinating with airport operators, AirNav Indonesia and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on developments in the volcanic ash movement.


Earlier, authorities said Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was temporarily closed since 1.30am today after volcanic ash was detected in the airport area.


The closure is extended until 1.30pm local time.

Meanwhile, the Halim Perdanakusuma, Raden Inten II and Pondok Cabe are scheduled to remain closed until 2pm, while Budiarto until 1.30pm. — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 6 — Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has urged passengers bound for Jakarta on affected flights to contact their airlines for the latest schedule information, after volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau forced the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

In a travel advisory, KLIA confirmed the ash-related closure and added via social media that resting areas have been set up for affected passengers awaiting further news.

“At Terminal 1, the designated resting areas are at Anjung Tinjau, Level 5 of the Main Terminal Building; the CRS Area, Level 3 of the Main Terminal Building; and Gate C36, Mezzanine Level of the Satellite Building.


“At Terminal 2, the resting area is located at Level 3A (Mezzanine Floor), Departure Hall,” it said.


Anak Krakatau, situated in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, continued its eruption on Saturday, with authorities reporting lava-fountaining activity and audible booming and rumbling sounds from an observation post.

The eruption began at 11.07 pm local time on Friday and persisted throughout observations from midnight to 6 am on Saturday.

Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said the volcano remains at Level III, or Siaga (Alert), with a three-kilometre exclusion zone in place around its active crater.


Authorities added that the volcano’s regrown edifice is relatively small and is not considered capable of collapsing on a scale that could generate a tsunami. — Bernama

The most notable eruptions of Krakatoa culminated in a series of massive explosions over 26–27 August 1883, which were among the most violent volcanic events in recorded history.

With an estimated volcanic explosivity index of 6,^[4] the eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT (840 PJ)—about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the Little Boy bomb (13 to 16 kt) dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II, and four times the yield of Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated at 50 Mt.

The 1883 eruption ejected approximately 25 km³ (6 cubic miles) of rock.^[5] The cataclysmic explosion was heard 3,600 km (2,200 mi) away in Alice Springs, Australia, and on the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,780 km (2,970 mi) to the west.^[6]

According to the official records of the Dutch East Indies colony, 165 villages and towns were destroyed near Krakatoa, and 132 were seriously damaged. At least 36,417 people died, and many more thousands were injured, mostly from the tsunamis that followed the explosion. The eruption destroyed two-thirds of the island of Krakatoa.

The combined effects of pyroclastic flows, volcanic ashes, and tsunamis had disastrous results in the region and worldwide. The death toll recorded by the Dutch authorities was 36,417, although some sources put the estimate at more than 120,000. There are numerous documented reports of groups of human skeletons floating across the Indian Ocean on rafts of volcanic pumice and washing up on the east coast of Africa up to a year after the eruption.^[37] Summer temperatures in the northern hemisphere fell by an average of 0.4 °C (0.72 °F) in the year following the eruption.^[38]
