Israel’s war on Gaza live news: Hamas claims capture of Israeli troops
- Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida says Hamas fighters “lured a Zionist force” into a tunnel and “killed, wounded, and captured” an unidentified number in northern Gaza’s Jabalia camp. The Israeli military denied the claim.
- Hamas official Osama Hamdan said there was no need for new negotiations with Israel, saying such talks only give the Israeli military “more time to continue the aggression” in Gaza.
- International outrage continues to reverberate as Israel ignores the world court’s order to immediately cease its attack on southern Rafah, with UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese saying: “Israel will not stop this madness until we make it stop.”
- At least 35,903 people have been killed and 80,420 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attack stands at 1,139 with dozens still held captive.

Former UN official questions US pier after latest difficulties
Craig Mokhiber, a former top UN human rights official, has questioned the US plan to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza through a temporary pier, after the US said four vessels supporting the pier were washed away in high seas on Saturday.
Mokhiber, who resigned from the UN last year, described the pier as a “fig leaf to cover US complicity in genocide and in the destruction of UNRWA” in a post on X.
Mokhiber said the pier had “failed to have any meaningful impact” while “Israel continues to block aid at all crossing points.”
The US army has said the pier remained operational, and is still working to deliver humanitarian assistance, after the incident.
On Friday, the UN said it had received the equivalent of 97 trucks of humanitarian supplies through the floating dock since it came into operation on May 17.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Friday that aid delivery through the pier had “stabilised” after a “rocky start” but “what we want to see, as we’ve been saying, is massive aid coming in through land routes.”

If you’re just joining us
These are the main developments from overnight:
- Israeli troops continued their assault on Rafah, killing at least six people in the Khirbet al-Adas area despite an ICJ ruling that ordered a halt to the military offensive there.
- Israeli officials told media that they believe the ICJ order does not rule out the entire offensive on Rafah, with the prime minister’s National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi saying: “What they are asking us is not to commit genocide in Rafah. We did not commit genocide and we will not commit genocide.”
- The director of the Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah appealed for help, warning that the medical facility would run out of fuel in less than 24 hours.
- Israeli forces have again launched a new raid on the city of Jenin and its refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, just days after an operation that killed at least 12 Palestinians.
- A UNRWA official said UN-provided humanitarian aid piling up at the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing could be transported into Gaza through the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing on Sunday. The latter is located at the borders of Egypt, Israel and Gaza.
