Wong Tack to stand as an independent in Bentong
This morning, DAP announced that Young Syefura Othman will be contesting in Bentong, where Wong Tack was the MP prior to Parliament’s dissolution.
PETALING JAYA: Wong Tack, who was earlier today dropped as a DAP candidate in the coming polls, will stand in Bentong as an independent.
In announcing this, Wong Tack said that he had been informed by DAP that he would not fit into the party’s “grand strategy” for the 15th general election (GE15) after he was dropped by the party in favour of former Ketari assemblyman Young Syefura Othman.
However, Wong Tack said he remained committed to serving the people of Bentong, describing the constituency as his “hometown”.
He also said that Himpunan Hijau, an environmental NGO he chairs, was not interested in playing political games.
“The people are not pawns in a game of chess.”
He also touched on a 2013 agreement DAP had with Himpunan Hijau on pushing an environmental campaign in Malaysia, which included the closure of the Lynas plant.
Wong Tack has been a vocal critic of the rare earth plant.
“Today, the DAP has decided to end this understanding. I wish to make clear that the people decide their own paths and understanding. The choice is ours.
“I, Wong Tack, will stand in the 15th general election for Bentong under the people’s ticket.”
At a press conference this morning, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the party spoke with Wong Tack about fielding him as a candidate elsewhere in GE15, namely in Cameron Highlands, but the latter apparently disagreed.
Wong Tack won the parliamentary seat in GE14 after beating then MCA president Liow Tiong Lai by more than 2,000 votes.
