‘Disappointed’ PN to seek meeting with PM over unkept promises

Perikatan Nasional will send a delegation to meet Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over their agreement.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional has voiced its disappointment with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over his failure to fulfil promises he made to the coalition.

In a statement, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the coalition has decided to send a delegation to meet Ismail on the fulfilment of the agreement it struck with him.

This comes amid revelations that Ismail signed an agreement with PN before the Umno vice-president’s appointment as the ninth prime minister in August 2021.

According to leaked copies of the agreement, a deputy prime minister’s post had been promised to PN lynchpin Bersatu.

On July 2, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said he had met with Ismail to discuss political appointments, including the deputy prime minister’s post, as previously agreed when the coalition decided to support Ismail’s government.

He also said the appointment of a deputy prime minister was part of an agreement between PN and Ismail.

Former prime minister Najib Razak then slammed Muhyiddin for having “misplaced priorities” in raising the matter at a time when Malaysians were struggling with the rising cost of living.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang denied the existence of such a formal agreement between PN and Ismail, but secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan later admitted to drafting a “memorandum of agreement” between the two sides in August 2021.

Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council members and Cabinet members from the party claimed that they were not informed of the agreement.
