Come on, let’s debate the cabotage policy on Nov 2, Guan Eng tells Wee
Former finance minister Lim Guan Eng and transport minister Wee Ka Siong have been involved in a war of words regarding the cabotage policy.
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he has agreed to MCA president Wee Ka Siong’s proposed debate on the cabotage policy to be held on Nov 2.
He said DAP’s Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching and Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming had been tasked with coordinating the debate and had contacted Wee’s office last week and were awaiting a reply.
“I am certain that Wee will not disappoint Najib (Razak) by either he or his office meeting both Dr Ong and Teo to work out the logistics and details of the debate,” Lim said in a statement, referring to the former prime minister.
He also asked Wee to clarify whether the Cabinet had made its decision on the cabotage policy.
“He had said a decision on the cabotage policy would be made by this month.
“This is already the end of October. What is the outcome of the Cabinet decision?”
Lim and Wee have been involved in a war of words over the cabotage policy for several months.
Wee said he was all for the cabotage debate but told Lim to choose any date after the budget is tabled on Oct 29.
He also said Lim should not “make up stories” that he had created a WhatsApp group for the two of them and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun over the debate. He showed screenshots of the supposed conversation which he stamped as fake.
Lim told Wee that these were not “screenshots” of an actual WhatsApp conversation but rather part of an online meme.
Lim had said the cabotage policy would cost Malaysia RM12 billion to RM15 billion in foreign investments.
The cabotage exemption had previously allowed foreign vessels to perform undersea repair jobs in Malaysian waters.
However, in November, Wee revoked the exemption for submarine cable repair to encourage local ships to undertake such jobs, dismissing claims that it would affect investments.
