PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has no right to reprimand people for flouting Covid-19 rules, since he himself breached movement control restrictions, a lawyer said today.
Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla said Sanusi should blame himself rather than the people over the rise in Covid-19 cases in the state, which reported 1,216 infections today alone.
“A leader who has been found guilty of going against the law loses his right and credibility to then issue statements about people breaking the same laws,” he said in a statement today.
Sanusi was fined RM1,500 recently for violating MCO restrictions in June by going for a test drive in Juru, Penang.
He was exposed by a woman on Facebook with photos of the menteri besar and two aides test driving a RM211,000 pick-up truck at Juru Auto City.
The menteri besar had denied test driving the vehicle, saying he was merely driven around by a salesman, while his political secretary Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said Sanusi had stopped to buy packed food on his way to a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
After the menteri besar was fined, his press secretary Muhamad Mat Yakim said Sanusi had misinterpreted the law when he took part in the test drive.
Haniff also took aim at Sanusi’s aide, without mentioning which one, for making illogical and conflicting arguments in trying to defend Sanusi “as though denying that there was any non-compliance and breach of SOPs”.
