Vaccine trial investigator says results unlikely to come before end of the year

Dr. Evan Anderson, principal investigator for the Moderna coronavirus vaccine clinical trial at Emory University, says the trial won’t yield results until after Election Day.
“At this point, it looks very unlikely that we would see any results before late November or December, at best, in my opinion. But it does depend how much Covid-19 is circulating in the community at the time that the study is ongoing,” Anderson said in an interview with CNN's Kate Bolduan.
Moderna is the first company to begin its phase three clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the US.
Enrollment is increasing rapidly, according to Anderson, and he predicts that full enrollment won’t happen until September.
Anderson said there would need to be studies to look at dosing and responses of children to the vaccine to determine if it is safe for them, and cautions that could “take a while.”
“I think it would be good to be able to start those studies soon so that we might be able to help protect children from Covid-19, as it is quite clear that they are infected with some frequency and do suffer life-threatening and even fatal events related to Covid-19 and the inflammatory syndrome that occurs afterwards,” he said.

The nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, confirmed to CNN on Friday that scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are working to create a strain of coronavirus that could be used in human challenge trials of a Covid-19 vaccine.
Fauci, director of the NIAID, described this approach as a "Plan D" – and the work is still preliminary. If needed, such human challenge trials would be in a matter of months at the earliest.
"We’re taking preliminary steps," he said.
Human challenge trials are typically used for when a virus is not widely circulating – the coronavirus is – and therefore, this approach may not be necessary, according to Fauci.
"Should there be a need for human challenge studies to fully assess candidate vaccines or therapeutics for SARS-CoV-2, NIAID has begun investigations of the technical and ethical considerations of conducting human challenge studies," the agency told Reuters.
Reuters first reported on Friday that government scientists have begun efforts to manufacture a strain of the novel coronavirus that could be used in human challenge trials of vaccines and some drugmakers — including AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson — told the news service they would consider human challenge trials to test Covid-19 vaccines if needed.

Typically pharmaceutical companies submit a candidate drug for FDA (& other responsible registration authorities') registration after completion of Phase 3 trials that confirm and/or strengthen Phase 2 findings.
ReplyDeleteHowever there have been many cases where Phase 3 trials DO NOT confirm Phase 2 data. The Phase 2 and 3 data is DIVERGENT. This means the drug is either useless (at best, do no harm but render no protection they are meant to render) or cause harm to the recipient (worst case scenario).
And yet we see some countries today that are approving Covid-19 vaccines for mass production and vaccination. Good luck to them.

Natural occurring viruses tend to mutate constantly & fast, in their contagious state, to meet the changing environments they r spreading to.
Their rate of mutation slow until they find a viable host, whose body immunization mechanism has adopted to tolerate their present. By then, they become less lethal to kill the host for coexistence. That's what herd immunization is counting on!

Dr Noor Hisham: New Covid-19 strain D614G detected in Malaysia, 10 times more infectious

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The Malaysian Institute for Medical Research has detected a D614G type mutation as a result of isolation and culture tests on three cases from the Sivagangga patient-under-investigation (PUI) Cluster and one case from the Ulu Tiram Cluster.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this means the community has to be more careful as the Covid-19 virus with the D614G mutation has been detected in Malaysia.
“It is found to be 10 times easier to infect other individuals and easier to spread, if spread by ‘super spreader’ individuals.
“So far, these two clusters have been found to be under-control as a result of the swift public health control actions. This initial test and several follow-up tests are being conducted to test several other cases, including for the index case for the two clusters," he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page today.
Explaining the matter, he said, the D614G mutation was discovered by scientists in July 2020 and it is likely to result in the study on existing vaccine to be incomplete or ineffective against the mutation...... — Bernama
