Iran war live: Trump says ceasefire extended as talks with Tehran in limbo

• US President Donald Trump has announced an extension to the Iran ceasefire, as he continues to blockade Iranian ports, until Tehran submits a proposal for talks, and “discussions are concluded, one way or the other”.
• Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says that “blockading Iranian ports is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire”, adding that Tehran knows “how to resist bullying“.
• Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Islamabad says that last-ditch efforts are under way by Pakistani mediators to try to salvage the highly anticipated second round of peace talks between the US and Iran.
• Israel continues to bomb southern Lebanon and demolish Lebanese homes, despite a 10-day ceasefire, with Hezbollah announcing an attack on northern Israel in retaliation for the truce violations.

  ‘Lack of historical grounding’ led to US belief Iran’s leadership could be easily ousted

  Here’s more from Brian Clark, director of defence concepts at the Washington, DC-based Hudson Institute think tank, who spoke to Al Jazeera’s Diplomatic Editor James Bays about the war on Iran.

  Trump has, for years, expressed his antipathy towards the Iranian leadership, Clark said, and it appears the president was looking for a “legacy measure that would change Iran permanently into, at least, a neutral if not more favourable state to the United States”.

  “So this is not a new thing for the president to be pursuing,” Clark explained.

  “I think both the US and Israeli leadership thought this was a time when they might be able to finally bring the regime to heel for good, because it was on its back foot,” he said.

  “And I think that reflects, maybe, a lack of historical grounding, because Iran is not going to be a country that’s easily dislodged from its current leadership structure,” he said.

  Israeli forces demolish homes in Lebanon’s al-Bayyadah

  The National News Agency (NNA) is reporting that Israeli forces have demolished a number of homes in the town of Al-Bayyadah in southern Lebanon.

  Powerful explosions were heard throughout the city of Tyre at dawn due to these demolitions, the NNA said.

  A second round of direct talks between Israel and Lebanon is set to take place on Thursday in Washington in an effort to reach an agreement while their fragile ceasefire largely holds.

Trump continues social media tirade, claims ‘Iran is collapsing financially’

The US president has continued his flurry of posts directed at Iran and critics of his war, saying in his latest post on his Truth Social platform that “Iran is collapsing financially!”

“They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately,” Trump said.

He also claimed that Iran is “Starving for cash! Losing 500 Million Dollars a day.”

The Iranian “Military and Police [are] complaining that they are not getting paid. SOS!!!” he added.
