TunM clutching at straws, accuses PMX of “treason” in inking one-sided deal with US
‘TREASON’ is a very serious and heavy accusation.
Never one to do things by half, twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused his disciple-turned-nemesis Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of precisely that.
Pointing his finger at PMX, the centenarian who governed Malaysia for 22 years and 22 months is of the opinion that the recently signed Agreement of Reciprocal Trade (ART) with the US is “unconstitutional”.
Jointly signed by PMX and US President Donald Trump on Oct 26, ART is aimed at boosting economic activity in both countries, adjusting tariffs and strengthening Malaysia-US cooperation.
However, it seems to have really upset Dr Mahathir who has loudly denounced the trade deal as unfair, lop-sided and selling out the country’s right to self-rule.
Recall that Dr Mahathir had on Nov 3 called on PMX to resign for allegedly “affecting the sovereignty” of the country.

‘PMX not sole gov’t rep’
Increasing the heat in already simmering political landscape, the longest serving PM of the country took the extraordinary step of lodging a report against PMX at the Putrajaya district police headquarters yesterday morning (Dec 2).
According to Sinar Harian, the now opposition-friendly Dr Mahathir further claimed that PMX’s actions were taken without the full mandate of the entities meant to represent the Federation of Malaysia.

“The agreement is not valid because he (Anwar) is not the sole representative of the Federation,” claimed the former Pejuang founder (he left the party in February 2023).
“Such agreements should require the consent of four main entities: the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, (YDPA), Dewan Rakyat, Council of Rulers and the executive (branch of the government) (of which such approval was not obtained).”
Added Dr Mahathir: “The agreement document is 400 pages long but has never been disclosed to the public. There are many clauses stating that our country’s powers are handed over to the US, requiring us to refer actions to them and allowing them to determine what can or cannot be done.”
Will TunM succeed in toppling PMX?
Commenting on the status and position of the Bumiputera – Malays and indigenous minorities – in the agreement, Dr Mahathir explained that the matter was not directly mentioned.
“In this agreement, all Bumiputera privileges cannot be imposed on American goods or trade. This means US powers override Bumiputera privileges, and any benefits given to Bumiputera must also be given to the US,” he argued.

Heavy accusations or just a reflection of Dr Mahathir’s obsession at unseating PMX? As most political observers are aware, the former strongman of Malaysian politics was instrumental in toppling each of his successors, except for PMX (till today).
Whether one agrees with the ex-UMNO supremo very much depends on the individual’s political persuasion. The flood of comments on social media will pretty much reflect this as opinions seem firmly split down the middle.
Will Dr Mahathir finally succeed in bringing down the Madani administration by attacking ART? Or will citizens dismiss this as just another pointless stunt to remain relevant?
Given that the drama in lodging a police report gained plenty of traction in the media, it appears that Dr Mahathir can still be a political thorn in PMX’s side. But whether that thorn can unseat PMX is a different story.
