Following a catastrophic showing in the recent Sabah state election, the majority of Sabah Bersatu divisions are demanding the resignation of party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

The party suffered a humiliating defeat, failing to secure a single one of the 36 seats it contested.

Muhyiddin (above), who also serves as chairperson of Perikatan Nasional, oversaw an equally dismal performance by the coalition, which captured only one of 42 seats - Karambunai, claimed by PAS.

According to the Borneo Post, Bersatu Libaran division head Yunus Nurdin said that Muhyiddin, who has been struggling to maintain control amid calls to pass the baton to his number two, Hamzah Zainudin, must take full responsibility for the party’s disastrous performance.

He revealed that 20 out of 24 Bersatu divisions had unanimously agreed to demand the former prime minister’s immediate resignation as both Bersatu president and PN chairperson.

Yunus, who also serves as a Bersatu supreme council member and Sabah PN secretary, said PN’s poor showing was the result of inadequate campaign support and internal political turmoil.

“There were significant shortcomings in the aspect of campaign assistance for Bersatu Sabah or PN Sabah, as we did not receive any support, assistance or campaign support such as allocation of election funds.

“This also includes preparation of campaign materials such as logistics campaigns involving promotions for the candidates themselves,” he said.

He further attributed the defeat to internal political manoeuvring at the central level.

“The central leadership has decided on several surprising decisions, especially in Sabah, among them are the dismissals and suspensions of several key members.

“We have raised this issue with the central leadership that this should not have happened, especially nearing the campaign period, but it was ignored.

“This internal political move has had a significant impact on the grassroots confidence, where we also face various criticisms by voters who stated that how can we win the election while this party is in the process of firing its members,” he added.

Accepting defeat

Yunus said Bersatu accepted the defeat with an open heart, but accountability must follow.

“We want the president to be held accountable and take full responsibility and to step down,” he said.

When asked if Sabah Bersatu chief Ronald Kiandee was aware of the matter, Yunus said he had not spoken to him.

“I actually did not discuss with the Sabah Bersatu chief because I tried to contact him, but he did not answer my call,” he added.

He also stressed that all 20 division heads were prepared to face disciplinary repercussions over their stance.

“We are aware, the Sabah leadership is aware that after this, there may be disciplinary action taken, and I would like to explain that if the central leadership takes any action, we will not hesitate to take a drastic action that can paralyse the entire Sabah Bersatu leadership body,” he added.
