MARANG – The political crisis in Perlis was triggered by pressure to approve major projects that allegedly did not follow proper rules and involved elements of corruption, says Pas President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
He said the pressure placed on Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli made it impossible for him to comply with actions that were wrong.
Hadi stressed that Mohd Shukri was not unjust, but instead became a victim for refusing to give in.
“He was not acting unfairly. His administration was accepted by the people and was seen as governing with integrity,” he said at a press conference here on Friday.
The situation escalated after eight State Assemblymen publicly withdrew their support for Mohd Shukri’s leadership.
Of the eight, three are from Pas, while the remaining five is from Bersatu.
They were reported to have signed statutory declarations (SDs) and submitted them to the Perlis Palace.

Following the political fallout, Mohd Shukri, who is also the Sanglang assemblyman, announced his resignation as Menteri Besar on Thursday, citing health reasons.
Hadi said another key factor behind the crisis was the demand for positions by certain individuals.
“In Pas and in Islam, positions are a trust. Those who ask for positions should not be given them, even if they are qualified,” he said.
He added that past experience has shown that the struggle for power often leads to division and betrayal, weakening both party unity and political stability.
