PUTRAJAYA: Religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar says he is fine not having a deputy as it will not affect his performance.

He said he respected Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s decision not to appoint a deputy minister for his portfolio.

Speaking to the media here, Na’im said the absence of a deputy minister would not hinder his efforts to look after matters related to Islamic affairs.

“It is the prime minister’s prerogative and I respect his decision. As I have mentioned before, being appointed as a minister is a big responsibility and it will be a greater responsibility without a deputy minister.

“We will do our best in shouldering the responsibility. If we fulfil our duties, it will show the civil servants’ ability,” he said after officiating at a Jakim event here today.

Yesterday, Anwar announced the appointment of 27 deputy ministers. Besides the religious affairs ministry, there is also no deputy for the national unity ministry.
