Former MIC stalwart Subra dies at 78

PETALING JAYA: Former MIC deputy president S Subramaniam, who had been in a coma at his home since he suffered brain aneurysm 11 years ago, passed away this evening. He was 78.

According to a family friend, he was pronounced dead at about 8pm, surrounded by family members. Funeral arrangements would be announced later.


Subra, as he was fondly known, suffered a cerebral bleed due to high blood pressure in November 2011. He slipped into a coma after a surgery and had remained in a coma at his home since then.

He was the longest serving MIC deputy president from 1979 to 2006 which saw him engage in bitter feuds with party president S Samy Vellu.


He served as Segamat MP for six terms and was also appointed senator for two terms when he was not fielded in the general election in 2004 by Samy Vellu.

He had served as deputy minister for a few terms under former prime ministers Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak.
