Mahathir - BIG spender

FMT - Dr M accused of going back and forth on Jakim (extracts):

PETALING JAYA: An ex-MP has accused former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad of being inconsistent in his statements regarding Jakim, the federal department for Islamic development.

Tawfik Ismail, who was the MP for Sungai Benut between 1986 and 1990, said Mahathir’s recent defence of his administration’s establishment of Jakim was at odds with a statement he made in November 2005 on the right of Malaysians to dismantle the department if they wanted to.

Tawfik Ismail son of former DPM the late Tun Dr Ismail

Robert Kuok said Mahathir was sh*T scared of Tun Dr Ismail

At a press conference yesterday, Mahathir rejected an accusation by his one-time rival in Umno, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, that Jakim was established as a tool for Umno to neutralise PAS’ influence on Muslims. He said it was instead aimed at harmonising the government administration with Islamic teachings.

Tawfik told FMT: “Mahathir’s ambivalence on Jakim raises questions on his attempt to undermine the authority of the Malay rulers over religion.”

He also said the former prime minister had a knack for setting up organisations that “parallel” others, and that Jakim was one of these.

“Setting up parallel organisations is his tradecraft in politics, like setting up Persatuan Anak Jawa Johor to split Johor Malays and establishing and being patron of Perkasa as a counter to Malay moderates.”

Tawfik said Umno Baru and Mahathir’s new party, PPBM, were other examples of parallel organisations, and accused the former prime minister of creating both in order to split the Malays.

Jakim was formally established in 1997 as a unit of the Prime Minister’s Department. Among its responsibilities is to determine the halal validity of products from the consumer food sector.

The department has come under intense criticism in recent years. Some critics have questioned its huge budget.

One thing about Mahathir has to be acknowledged, that is, he did not only think BIG but more importantly and, alas, disastrously for us Malaysians, spent BIG, very BIG when you consider the public money lost and wasted through his hare-brain schemes of FOREX, MAMINCO, Perwaja, BMF, MAS, crooked bridge, etc etc etc.

LKS - NATO only

I suspect that could be because the BIG spending he did was not of his own money but those of pitiful Malaysian taxpayer's.

Yes, he liked to think BIG, spent BIG but also, as mentioned by Tawkif Ismail (son of the late Tun Dr Ismail), set up organisations that “parallel” others so as to "fix" his rivals kaukau, eg. as follows:

(a) Jakim at RM1 Billion per year (to attack PAS' Islamic flank, to undermine the rulers' position as Islamic heads of their respective states),

(b) Persatuan Anak Jawa Johor (to split Johor Malays),

(c) Perkasa and also as patron of the right wing Malay NGO (to counter Malay moderates and to pressure Najib on Malay ultra rights),

(d) UMNO Baru (to politically preempt and oust rival Tengku Razaleigh),

(e) Pribumi (to oust Najib as PM for his son)

It's frightening there is this BIG SPENDER who will now be embraced by young Chinese who did NOT live under his draconian reign.

This graph shows the True Story of who is the real spendthrift.
Between 2004 and 2017, the Malaysian Government's foreign debt (money owed to foreign entities by Rakyat Malaysia) went from RM 150 Billion to RM 450 Billion.

The steepest climb occurred from 2009 to 2017.....with Malaysian Official 1 in charge.

Who is the Real BIG SPENDER ?

A poor man from zero bank deposit suddenly finds himself richer by winning RM100. His fortune improves by 100%.

A rich man having RM 1million, suddenly finds himself poorer by RM 100k due to black swans flocking around the stock exchange. His fortune decreases by 0.01%!

      Who's better off??

BTW, mana tu 103% coming from??

    3. From this book "Malaysia's Development Challenges: Graduating from the Middle"
      By the eminent authors:
Hal Hill is the H.W. Arndt Professor of Southeast Asian Economies in the Department of Economics, Australian National University.
Tham Siew Yean is a Professor and Principal Fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), National University of Malaysia.
Ragayah Haji Mat Zin is a Professor and Principal Fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), National University of Malaysia.

I rather prefer a printed book than a website that can be altered or removed anytime.

So riddle me this, my good CK.
A fresh grad earning Rm2000, has to loan Rm2000 as downpayment of his new car.
A director earning RM100,000, has to loan RM50,000 as downpayment for his new car.

Which of these 2 person has a debt problem?

    4. I have this book lying somewhere amongst the piles of books.

Let me dig it out & check the relevant passages wrt this "Gov debts went from 103% under Mahathir's rule to today's 50%."

BTW, Malaysia recorded a government debt equivalent to 53.20 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product in 2016.

Government Debt to GDP in Malaysia averaged 48.43 percent from 1990 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 80.74 percent in 1990 and a record low of 31.80 percent in 1997.

Many developed countries, US, Japan, S'pore, have exceptional high Governmet debt as a percent of GDP (above 100 & closed to 250!). These r a OK for they have amble reserve to pay for the debts when a sudden recall of debt happens.

M'sia is definitely NOT in that category even though the last available data is 53.2 (Dec2016).

Judging by the fact that the current govt has to sell land to Bank Negara to raise fund to pay for the IPIC repayment. The oversea investors MUST have doubt about her ability to make future payments on its debt, thus affecting the country borrowing costs and government bond yields.

Let me double check first lah about what that book is trying to imply.

Then we will know WHO has the last laugh le!

    5. Wakakakaka...riddle eh!

Both of them pun tak ada debt problem lah.

The fresh grad CAN'T get a loan for very obvious reason. So, no loan no debt lah.

The director can easily get a loan based on his income. Again no debt problem, as he can easily settle the installment from his salary lah.

Unless he is that cowgate type!

      Wakakakaka..?

    6. Based on ur reply that means in Mahathir's era and Najib's era, there's no problem lah.

    7. 1st, based on my initial combing of the book, u r ACTUALLY propagating fake infos!

Best, if u could requote that particular text in its FULL context here. Let the readers decide lah.

2nd, during both era, bolihland was/is in dire straits financially.

Mamak was resourceful to think out of the box to tackle the 97 financial crisis via capital control.

Bolihland pulled through with the business community & rakyat suffering BUT not as severe & doomed as expected by those IMF/WorldBank 'experts'.

Currently, pinklips is scratching every corners of the coffer to come up with ANY moorla to meet HIS debts (especially 1MDB's) commitment.

Tabung Haji lah, Mulia lah, IWH&CREC lah, now Bank Negara!

      Soon kwap/kwsp/pnb??

      External financial help?

The Western institutions WONT touch M'sia until jibby's gone. Hence the dead silence in this front.

The Eastern big guys WOULD want jibby to pawn the heirloom (more autonomous land deals, HSR) in exchange of moorla injections. BUT, then, there is only so much such schemes!

Unlike mamak's approaches, there r nothing out-of-the-box about pinklips very conventional fiscal resolutions in solving his debt problems.

In fact the volatile 2000+ points swing of DowJones in the 1st week of Feb2018 probably causes a heart attack in pinklips!

Suck a financial grey rino has been long expected to happen. When it finally does, that WOULD be the fall of pinklips' financial covers juggling.

& with it the severe financial winter that's going to doom bolihland!

    8. "In the first case, although the Malaysian government entered the 1970s virtually debt free, debt began to build up rapidly, from 10 percent in 1970 to 100 percent in the mid-1980s (Figure 1.6)"

Aww come on! Now u uturn and said both eras has debt problems. Earlier scenario, u said both have no problems! So which is which now?

Answer me truthfully, either the freshie who took a 100% loan or a director who took a 50% loan, has a debt problem?

    9. Wakakakaka.... U really learn fast from yr sifus (kt & mom??).

      1) where is context of the graph?

      2) which period does it cover? (Bearing in mind the reign of mamak, wa lau-eh, talk about misleading!)

      3) r the debts referred to the combinations of domestic & foreign elements?

If u take the same approach, then the debts under jibby r even bigger!

So, u read but don't know how to analyse.... tsk... tsk. Or worst, manipulate the figures to yr advantages!

BTW, where did I say both have no problems!

The freshies with a meager salary can never qualify for a loan. So, no loan no debt. Unless he cheats lah.

Simpleton can be conned, willingly or blur-sotongly, by skillful number acrobat.

Yr riddle falls into that trick!

    10. You took ur time yet cannot answer what I highlighted in the passage from the book. Walauweh, still wanna pusing!

Which period does it cover? Please read lah! You have the book kan?

BTW, where did I say both have no problems!
Ans: "Both of them pun tak ada debt problem lah."

Read what you wrote above adoiiii!

Stop with the pusing acrobatics. Answer my riddle within context please.
