Saiful Bukhari Azlan - Victim or Villain?

Strangely, 23-year-old Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the alleged victim of sodomy or the alleged UMNO villain of stealth, depending upon your political allegiance, has been dismissed into a minor supporting role, one in a cast of thousands, whilst Anwar Ibrahim assumes centre stage with AAB, Najib, Musa Hassan and Patail.

Look, Saiful wasn’t one of those thousands who just made coffee or open doors in PKR (why need someone to open doors?) as one anwaristas had suggested in a silly attempt to diminish his connection with Anwar. I read in an earlier news article in Malaysiakini that Anwar was looking for him since Thursday, wondering where he had disappeared to. He has been described consistently as a special aide to Anwar.

Malaysiakini reported in Saiful in hiding, uncle has faith that Saiful has been subjected to horrendous character assassination on the Internet.

Malaysiakini continued with Saiful's uncle saying:

"But I believe in Saiful. He is a good kid and all that he has done, he has done with honesty. I just got back from Perak and we've not been in touch but I know why he lodged the report."

Teary-eyed, the uncle said that his nephew reported the matter as he wanted to expose the PKR leader for what he was. When asked about Saiful's alleged links to Umno politicians, the uncle brushed them off.

"We've got no help or connections with Umno. All he wanted to do is to expose the heinous crime."

On Saturday when Malaysiakini first released the explosive news Aide alleges sodomy: Report lodged, it stated that (on Saturday) "at 11.15 pm, PKR sent out an SMS message stating that the police had detained Anwar's special aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan this afternoon and forced him to lodge a police report about being sodomised by his boss."

‘…forced him to lodge a police report …’

Then a day later, Malaysiakini published Alleged sodomy was 'in a Damansara condo' in which it said “Anwar has rejected the fresh accusations against him - the second time in 10 year - and described it as a complete fabrication. PKR also said that Saiful was arrested and forced by the police to lodge such a report against Anwar.”

‘ … Saiful was arrested and forced by the police to lodge such a report …’

However today, Malaysiakini tells us in Anwar files libel suit against aide the obvious (from its headlines), that Anwar has just filed a suit against his former aide for allegedly defaming him by lodging a malicious and false report about the sodomizing.

Anwar also claimed that Saiful knew that he has intended to stand for elections in the near future, and Saiful’s police report, which apparently contained nasty salacious descriptions, would receive humongous media coverage and undoubtedly bugger (pun not intended) Anwar’s election prospect.

Presumably Saiful 'knew' because he was Anwar's special aide.

Worse, the police report implied that Anwar had committed a heinous act contrary to the Muslim faith.

Malaysiakini also reported Anwar’s lawyer Sivarasa stating that Saiful’s allegations were politically motivated and ill-intended towards tarnishing Anwar's political reputation.

… so on so forth ...

… quite a change from Anwar’s initial assertion that poor old Saiful had probably made the report ‘under duress’ - and we Malaysians know what ‘under duress’ means, don’t we? – to the current Saiful who is allegedly a lying Judas.

Yesterday I posted Has Dr Wan Azizah blundered badly? where I reckoned Dr Wan Azizah’s attempt to distance her hubby from Saiful was a tactical blunder.

But I also added: "... Holey Moley, the Anwar camp must be panicking for Wan Azizah to come out with such a - if you don’t mind me saying this of her - really stupid assertion ..."

… the assertion being Saiful was seen in a photo with Najib Razak's aide in front of the DPM's office. There was lso another photo with some other ministers.

But should we cast Saiful straightaway into the role of villain based on a few such photos, which could be innocent souvenir snapshots of a young student with ministers.

Don’t ask Tian Chua because he would quite happily run away with less than a real photo.

To summarize, Saiful is either a victim or a villain.

Let’s start off with his alleged villainy, based no doubt in large part on his photo snapshots with some ministers.

Does that mean he had been a deep UMNO plant who somehow wasn’t given any background check by PKR, but yet could could worm his way into the confidence of Anwar to the extent that in a mere 3 months he became a special aide to the PKR de facto leader?

How could this happen?

But what if he has been a victim?

He was raped? But by whom? Which party had raped him (maybe with an instrument) and then forced/threatened him or his family or both (putting him under duress) to make a false report implicating Anwar Ibrahim?

... or ...

He wasn’t raped but forced/threatened anyway as above?

If he has been a victim, then it’s really bad form for Anwar Ibrahim to further penalize him with the legal suit, just as Wan Azizah had attempted to distance her hubby from him.

But most important of all, should he be vilified on the Internet or deserving of some sympathy for his victimization (if he has been a victim)? The problem with Malaysians is that they don't have the patience or the inclination to wait for due process ;-)

A third possibility would be that he is a PKR kamikaze volunteer for Anwar, by pretending to be a victim to facilitate the Drama King’s refuge in the Turkish Embassy, so as to elicit worldwide media coverage and international political support for his 'cause'?

Is there any reliable proof, other than Anwar's claim, that Anwar is under threat of an assassination?

Malaysia has been fortunate that up to now, we haven’t had any politicians assassinated on the basis of power struggle. It’s not in our culture. The only pollie who was killed by a MB from the same party was as a result of passion and not so much politics. Murdered victim had the bloody temerity to bonk the MB’s sister.

I find it hard to believe the assassination claim.

Oh BTW, Malaysiakini has just reported that Anwar leaves Turkish embassy after being assured of his safety by three ministers - Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, Foreign Minister Rais Yatim and the man he has been trying to get, DPM Najib Razak ;-).

  1. To prevent the crossing over of BN 30 MPs, umno would commit genocide, let alone murder. This is about the life and death of certain bigshots and their families who would be hauled up to the courts and sentenced accordingly should they lose their political positions. For opposing his umno masters, Yong Teik Lee already faces the prospect of being jailed on corruption charges.

  2. So far actions and statements coming out from PKR are not consistence and they are applying the pressure. In the eye of the silent majority this will not be good for them.

Thank you for your balanced, unbiased analysis. This is what we need in the sea of fanatical blogs around us today. The government has got so much to lose but Anwar has got so much to gain if the country were to descend into Zimbabwe way. So at the time when the government needs to win the heart and mind of the people, it doesn't make sense for the government to choose this route but it makes so much sense for Anwar to create a crisis so Malaysia would be seen as another Zimbabwe.

Fellow readers, this is nothing more than a just another political drama, so stand aside and watch with open mind. It could be government's or it could be anwar's own doing. Nothing is impossible.

  4. BETUL!

mahathir is right - anwar indeed is a sodomite. who know he has the appetite for buttsex with a youth. and that poor boy is "special" aide if you know what it means ........

he thinks malaysians mudah lupa, and it's irony to have future PM a sodomite, isn't? but what if it's real, just like CSL who have taste of woman who can become his daughter......

    1) A dropout student qualify for a scholarship? and is issued directly by "Pejabat Timbalan Perdana Menteri"? (Since when scholarship was award directly from "Pejabat Timbalan Perdana Menteri"? then what is the function of JPA, Ministry of Higher Education?...)

    2) Unit di kondominium mewah itu dianggarkan bernilai sekurang-kurangnya RM2.2 juta dan kadar sewanya adalah antara RM7, 500 hingga RM15, 000.

  8. Have your conveniently forgotten about a Minister (of Youth & Sports Ministry?) who personally murdered a then Speaker of NS State Assembly in the 1970s or 80s?

This murder case is even more blatant then your claim that "Malaysia has been fortunate that up to now, we haven’t had any politicians assassinated on the basis of power struggle. It’s not in our culture. The only pollie who was killed by a MB from the same party was as a result of passion and not so much politics."

Nevertheless, let's hope that the law would be allowed to take its course in the current case.

  12. Hmm... I think the contradictions are simply statements being made and changed as more facts become known. Not really a big deal. I don't read any ulterior motive presonally but to each his own.

What we know from the 1998 case is that Sukma and Munawar "confession" was definitely under duress as you can check yourself by their statements and especially by Munawar's interviews in various media after he was released and the simple and glaring incongruencies in the prosecutor's case. Azizan the driver has not retracted his confession but I believe the dates of the allegations have all been disproved? (correct me if I am wrong as it has been a long time).

I think the facts of the previous incident is why everyone is jumping to all these conclusions in this case.

I am beginning to feel this blog does more damage to the Malaysian cause. One wonders why KT doesn't join UMNO without further delay?

  18. KTEMOC , I must correct myself, there are indeed 2 narratives.

    1. This is by the IGP and AG and they have coerced a statement under duress due to evidence DSAI is about to release concerning his earlier case

    2. Saiful is an Umno plant

Not sure where these 2 allegations converge or whether they do at all.

So tell me from the bottom of your heart what you mean by due process in the first place.

THE FOLLOWING IS A MAJORITY DECISION REACHED BY THE JUDGES SITTING IN THE FEDERAL COURT ON THE ANWAR IBRAHIM APPEAL AGAINST HIS CONVICTION ON SODOMY.
PLEASE NOTE AND READ CAREFULLY THE VERDICT, THAT ALTHOUGH THE JUDGES HAD NO DOUBT IN THEIR MINDS THAT THE ACT OF SODOMY BY ANWAR IBRAHIM HAD TAKEN PLACE, BUT TO RELY SOLELY ON AZIZAN’S EVIDENCE WOULD BE UNSAFE FOR THE PURPOSES OF UPHOLDING THE JUDGEMENT.

    MAJORITY JUDGMENT OF
    ABDUL HAMID MOHAMAD F.C.J.
AND TENGKU BAHARUDIN SHAH TENGKU MAHMUD J.C.A.
In this judgment, Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim will be referred to as “the first appellant” and Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja will be referred to as “the second appellant”.
The first appellant was charged with an offence punishable under section 377B of the Penal Code.
The second appellant was charged with two offences. The first charge is for abetting the first appellant in the commission of the offence with which the first appellant was charged. The second charge is similar to the charge against the first appellant i.e. under section 377B of the Penal Code.
Both the appellants were tried jointly. The first appellant was convicted and sentenced to nine years imprisonment commencing from the expiry of the sentence he was then serving in the first trial. High Court Kuala Lumpur Criminal Trial No. 45-48-1998 (1999)2 M.L.J. 1 (H.C), (2002)2 M.L.J. 486 (C.A.) and (2002) 3 M.L.J. 193 (F.C.)). The second appellant was convicted on both charges and sentenced to six years imprisonment and two strokes for each charge with the sentences of imprisonment to run concurrently. For the judgment of the High Court in the present case, see (2001) 3 M.L.J. 193.
They appealed to the Court of Appeal. Their appeals were dismissed – see (2004) 1 M.L.J. 177.
They appealed to this court and this is the majority judgment of this court.
Section 87(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 (“CJA 1964”) provides that a criminal appeal to this court “may lie on a question of fact or a question of law or on a question of mixed fact and law.” The position is the same as in the case of the Court of Appeal hearing an appeal from a trial in the High Court as in this case – see section 50(3) CJA 1964.
To summarise our judgment, even though reading the appeal record, we find evidence to confirm that the appellants were involved in homosexual activities and we are more inclined to believe that the alleged incident at Tivoli Villa did happen, sometime, this court, as a court of law, may only convict the appellants if the prosecution has successfully proved the alleged offences as stated in the charges, beyond reasonable doubt, on admissible evidence and in accordance with established principles of law. We may be convinced in our minds of the guilt or innocence of the appellants but our decision must only be based on the evidence adduced and nothing else.”

  32. Hello,

    Sekian.

Be honest with yourself, you know it. In regardless, I don't personally believe Anwar can be so stupid to commit this crime at a time which is very crucial for his political career. It just doesn't make sense. Again, this guy may not be instructed by BN but he may want to obtain the favour in doing so. You may say that I am critical of that ass hole, of course I am!! With a CGPA of 1.8++, you can get scholarship directly from the DPM office???? What does that say??? Either he is a crony or he is offering his ass to be sodomised by the DPM and his goons!! Student leader, my ass!! BN croynies were saying that Anwar is a drama king, I personally prefer a drama king more that all those arseholes who are milking Malaysia high and dry. Has Malaysia forgotten about the late Zakaria with his istana in Klang?? Is that the UMNO dream that the supporters are hoping to live in?? Ever since the political tsunami, I have been trying to be neutral, hoping the best for the country but it's not going there. Saudara adalah penyokong BN and I was....

I think there are more important economic issues to address with the whole world being effected by soaring crude oil prices , badly performing stock markets here and in the rest of the world . And here in Malaysia we are getting daily chaos political scenes unfolding . What I reckon is that what they are doing is affecting everybody here in Malaysia .

Evolution has to be done gradually as Malaysian politics evolve it should be at its own pace and not forcing an immediate change . This is like a revolution .

I am sure many of you may have similar questions youselves after reading the news report.

This reminds me , many years ago when my older boy was 2 years old,
he tripped my CD tower and it came crashing down to the floor, when I got there, he planted his suffed toy near the carnage and said "teddy did it" with innocent eyes and expected me to believe it.
I see denials from the government of the day to sometimes have as much sophistication as "teddy bear" denials.
Now back to the statement by Saifuls family ( which to me sounds like a poorly written script ) :-

    Quote~
We are not getting any backing from the Government. We are on our own but as a family we fully support Saiful.

While it is good to stick up for a family member, why presume when there is yet any accusations, very few
genuine victims talk about motive, collusion or bribes- most just scream for justice.

    Quote~
“We had asked for the Government’s help but they have chosen to back off and not dirty their hands,” he said when met at his house here yesterday

Who in the government did you go to ? Please elaborate how they chose to back off ?

    Quote~
The uncle added that they had repeatedly called the Inspector-General of Police but were told to stop calling his number.

So in other words you expect us to believe thatafter being turned away by Government officials you believed that the IGP
who is widely seen as doing the bisdiing of the political masters would help you.
You could have gone to Suhakam, Bar Council, Amnesty International or other independent bodies to help you.

    Quote~
He said his nephew had initially approached the Bukit Aman police station to lodge his report against Anwar but they turned him away upon learning who he was accusing.

Again names please, time you went there and what transpired, you expect us to believe that they are more afraid of Anwar now then when he was the DPM.

    Quote~
Mohd Saiful eventually found a police station in Kuala Lumpur which was willing to accept his report, his uncle added.

Please name us the station and the brave officer who took the report that the Government officials , IGP and Bukit Aman dared not touch,
he or she deserves a medal.

    Quote~
“Saiful is no longer in the hospital but is under police protection and even our family does not know his whereabouts,” he said.

Forgive my sarcasm, but do you expect us to believe that despite the governments and top police officials refusal to get involved,
they are now providing Saiful protection, when Anwar is holed up in the Turkish Embassy asking for a guarantee to his safety,
and when the DPM was pressed as to providing police protection for Anwar, the best he could commoit is "I leave it to the police to decide".

    Quote~
The uncle said the family would eventually hold a press conference to allow Saiful to “explain from A to Z” his accusations against Anwar.

Trial by media, when a defamation suit has already been filed by Anwar against your nephew- a very daring feat indeed for one
who claims to have no backing, we all know what sodomy is -no need to explain, we are more interested in the evidence you have,
I would advise against it as the police have yet to establish a prima-facie case.

    Quote~
“Our family is a small family and we do not benefit in any way from Saiful’s revelation

I fail to see any correlation between the size of your family and deriving benefits from this episode,
your reasons are incoherent akin to someone under threat, why go on repeating the "not gaining anything" mantra
when the issue should be justice.

    Quote~
“We are not getting any money and in fact our family is being cut off by other people.

For cying out loud, enough already, if you dont benefit, are you doing it under duress ?
If so who is threatening you ?

    Quote~
“Saiful is sacrificing himself for the country even though he knows that society will scorn him and the family for his accusation,” the uncle said

Oh really , then name the government officials who resused to help, the police station that refused to take the report, and let action be taken against them,
you will truly help the country this way.Why use the word "sacrifice" if you were truly wronged you should ask for justice.

    Quote~
He said Mohd Saiful had also contemplated suicide as he felt that he had committed a sin.

So is this an admission to bisexuality, that it was consensual ? Does your nephew understand that
if it was consensual, he is admitting to an offence under the penal code, in that case do you not wonder
why he isnt being charged with "carnal intercourse against the order of nature" ?
You expect us to believe that after his admission he is being given protection and not being charged,
to be standard procedure ? I am sure the religious authorities would be more than happy to provide him with
counselling since he has repented and after he serves jail term of course.

    Quote~
The uncle said he had been a strong supporter of Anwar but was disillusioned now.

Really ? Come to a conclusion so soon, before the evidence has been adduced, or
did you witness the act personally ?

    Quote~
On why Mohd Saiful had pictures with of him posing with Cabinet Ministers and a Prime Minister’s Department aide, his uncle said it was normal for a student leader to take pictures with government officials.

True, but the DPM quoted "He explained that the photograph was taken on Feb 12 this year after Anwar's aide had come there with a friend to meet his (Najib's) officer for assistance to secure a government scholarship for further education".
Now how is it that straight A students line up at PSD some in vain to get scholarships , when your nephew a UNITEN dropout can see the DPM's officer.
and you expect us to believe that he has no ties whatsoever with the government.

  39. Well said, very balance, unlike the bias version from PKR, PAS, DAP, or BN.

Your writing does not made you an UMNO person. Typical of PR's supporters mentality: Anyone who disagree with them or refuse to acknowledge the perfectness of their leaders is labelled as die hard UMNO fan.

I am more inclined to belief that the whole thing was cooked up by Anwar himself; mainly to gain support via sympathy and at the same time, frame BN.

His intention is also clear, to wreck country into havoc, agree with one of the commentors above, to turn Malaysia into Zimbabwe

  42. i don't think much of the ruling party nor the opposition in Malaysia. I'm a Malaysian & a Malay. Reading these kind of news in the papers & watching them on TV is a waste of time n makes the mind sick. Stupid. Thats all I can say. And let me say this: All politicians are liars and actors - from the ruling party or the opposition. Sick, all of them.

  43. hahaha to iamsaifulbukhariazlan - if u use that nick u shouldn't say such a thing about Saiful - you are passing judgement before knowing the facts. I'm not siding anyone but pls la, Malays especially, don't be so gullible - to either BN or PR. They are all politicians, fighting for themselves. At this moment thats how I view it all.And I remain a passive watcher. Doesn't hurt me a bit nor do i lose anything if I'm not involved or not supporting any of them. At least just one of the PR 'members' PAS, ('kampung' as it is), deserves some respect from me - that too only a small percentage of respect.

  44. I did not understand why the reaction of Malaysian sodomy victim is totally different from the profile studied by the National Center For Victim of Crime. He looks physically well, psychological calm and emotionally controlled.

  45. Saiful how much do they pay you? Berapa juta?

  46. We will never know the truth except the Almighty, but then, a person who happened to be in such a trauma shouldn't be as calm as this fella. His body language alone raises suspicion over this matter, and he even gave a mnysterious smile when he lodged the report the other day for millions of Malaysians to see. Then tell me again how on earth could anybody really believe that he's been sodomized?

  47. is this a joke? the govt is making itself a laughing stock to everybody. it appears barbaric and tyrannical.
surely we are living in the 21st century and not in the stone age. even the stone age people were not bothered by nudity and covering for we are born without clothes.
so what is the buggeration? who is bothered by it? only a person with cerebral diarrhoea can come up with this unbelievable accusation again. and so continues the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of those who all of a sudden become pillars of morals and saintly except they forgot to put on a halo on their head.
to be sure, these so-religious people would have enjoyed the heights of sex, unless they are spurned by their wives leaving them unfulfilled and being unable to stand the sight of happy couples decide to create difficulties for them.
if buggeration is wrong, then sex to have babies is wrong too. it should be considered dirty and yet everyone has to come out via the channel where the urine passes; that is how human beings are made.
how do the so-called moral-bearing people tell the african tribe to stop buggering their wives due to condoms not available in their country and this is their means of population control?
does anyone realised many of these laws harrassing the people are not made by the gods? they are made by man to serve most of man's selfish purposes.
religions are meant to save the world, not to torture and harass the people. i would not believe in a god that makes the people suffer.
the duty of religious people is to show the world the goodness of their religions and not force them into it. where is the freedom to choose your religion? or maybe the religious people are confused themselves or maybe they think they would be out of job if they do not show the world they are doing something (which is usually something wrong most of the times). such misguided and misinformed people, the education gone to waste except for coffeeshop talk, an education that the parents labour to provide for their children in the hope education would liberate them from ignorance and achieve a higher level of enlightenment and a better life. time to wake up, people, we are not savages.
