Malaysia won’t allow cargo aiding Israel’s military, says Anwar
Three Israel-bound containers were seized at Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor on Aug 19.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said Malaysia remained committed to preventing the country from being used to facilitate military aggression or acts against innocent lives.
“Malaysia’s position is clear and unequivocal. We will not allow our country to be used as a conduit for any shipment that supports or contributes to Israel’s military capabilities and its atrocities against Palestinians and other innocent lives,” he said in a statement posted on X today.
He said any suspicious shipment would be inspected and investigated in accordance with Malaysian law, adding that decisive action would be taken if any violations were found.
Anwar’s statement comes after Bloomberg reported that authorities had seized three Israel-bound containers at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor on Aug 19.
The containers reportedly contained electric bicycle parts shipped by a Chinese manufacturer and were bound for the Port of Ashdod, south of Tel Aviv. Their contents are still being investigated.
The seizure followed another incident on Aug 7, when authorities detained a container from the Philippines suspected of containing weapons and destined for Israeli defence technology company Elbit Systems Ltd.
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency said the goods were examined to verify their nature, specifications, intended use and classification, as well as to determine whether they were subject to trade control laws.
Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
The Strategic Trade Act 2010 regulates the export of sensitive technology and materials, including measures aimed at preventing terrorism, nuclear proliferation and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
