Malaysiakini journalist B Nantha Kumar has been released this afternoon after four days under remand.

He was arrested over alleged bribery last Friday.

He stepped out from Putrajaya MACC headquarters around 3pm in good condition.

Also present were Nantha's wife, and Malaysiakini executive editor RK Anand who posted RM10,000 bail for him.

Nantha (above) is being accused of receiving RM20,000 from an agent dealing with foreign workers, in exchange for not publishing two articles that would expose the cartel.

The journalist has worked with Malaysiakini for seven years and has written extensively about immigration syndicates, including those involving the Immigration Department.

Editor’s note:

Malaysiakini acknowledges the seriousness of the allegation against our journalist and does not take it lightly. We will conduct a thorough inquiry to uncover the facts.

Since joining Malaysiakini in 2018, Nantha has been an outstanding journalist, producing numerous exclusives that have made headlines. His fearless reporting on syndicates linked to migrant workers has been instrumental in exposing critical issues.

Given his track record, we find these allegations difficult to comprehend.

Malaysiakini remains steadfast in its commitment to journalistic integrity, transparency, and ethical reporting - principles that have guided us since our founding. We believe in accountability, fairness, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

Our inquiry will be thorough, just, and firmly aligned with the values we uphold.

Given the nature of Nantha’s work and Malaysiakini's reporting on high profile corruption scandals - and the significant interests it has addressed - we are committed to thoroughly investigating the situation to uncover the truth and determine if any efforts were made to silence him or undermine Malaysiakini’s reputation.

We call on the authorities to protect the whistleblowers connected to Nantha's investigation, some of whom hold high positions in the Immigration Department.
