Berjaya Corp Bhd lodged a police report on April 26 in a bid to track down the “unnamed sources” quoted in a Bloomberg report about a purported plan to build a casino in Forest City.
The company has since refuted claims that such plans were in the pipeline.
In a statement yesterday, it said the sources had tarnished Berjaya’s reputation by spreading false information and that it trusts the police would take the necessary measures to investigate the matter.
“We respectfully encourage any publication to be done more tactfully before making any allegations without prior verification,” the statement read.
Berjaya also said it is confident the report was written with malicious intent to cause upheaval in the public discourse and create a bad perception towards the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“Such malicious publications are further aggravated by the fact that neither news agencies had made any attempt whatsoever to verify nor confirm the veracity and accuracy of the statements in the articles before publishing the same, especially when the statements were attributed to ‘unnamed sources’,” it added.
Berjaya urged Bloomberg and The Edge Singapore, which had picked up the story, to remove any “inaccurate information” that misrepresented the company’s purported meeting with Anwar about reviving the multibillion ringgit mega project in Johor.
The prime minister had also denied that a casino is part of the project revival and urged the authorities to take necessary action against the news agencies.
