Wee: MCA prepared to fight solo if friends seek greener pastures



MCA is prepared to operate on its own should BN component parties seek new political alliances to reverse their fortunes, according to its president Wee Ka Siong.

In his speech at the MCA general assembly in Kuala Lumpur this morning, he noted how the last general election led to changes within the coalition.

Wee also stressed the importance of working together with the right individuals to reform and restore BN, which was ousted in the 2018 general election and now finds itself in a partnership with its former adversaries in Pakatan Harapan after the last national polls.

Since its inception, the former transport minister said BN has been the model for multiracial political cooperation and power sharing.

“However, it cannot be denied that the results of the 15th general election have led to subtle changes in the relationship between BN component parties and the spirit of consensus has been put to test.

“Therefore, MCA must join hands with insightful individuals from other BN parties to reform BN and retrieve its essence,” he added.

Wee stressed the importance of component parties closing ranks to ensure that the coalition is prepared for the 16th general election and to return to mainstream politics.

He pointed out that BN cannot be dependent on others forever and wait for handouts.

“Assuming some BN component parties have had a change of heart and are intending to find new love, choosing to abandon allies who faced hurdles together for decades.

“Then, MCA is determined to be self-reliant and to operate independently even if this means starting from scratch.

“The most important thing is that MCA cannot regress to the status of a welfare organisation,” he added.


New norm in politics

Reminding delegates that politics is the art of turning the impossible into the possible, Wee noted how no single party is dominant in the current political landscape.

He said the new norm in Malaysian politics is a joint government with parties seeking new allies.

Wee said MCA is open to cooperating with political parties that are moderate and in line with its principles.

However, he emphasises that the immediate task is to strengthen MCA through reforms, promotion of talent, improving organisational fitness, strengthening mobilisation capabilities and other measures.

“We must prove that we are influential allies with appeal, partners who can add value to them and the entire political alliance. Only then, in the face of changing circumstances, can we seize the opportunity for a resurgence,” he added.

In urging members not to lose heart, Wee described politics as a “long march”.

“In the long years of struggle, momentary success or failure is not enough to judge a hero.

“Be fully prepared at all times, persistently do every task well, do our best to benefit the most people, and exert the maximum effect we can.

“As long as we continue to strive, our glorious moment will come soon, and we will succeed in creating brilliance for the party once again,” he added.

Unlike previous MCA assemblies, representatives from other BN parties were not present this year.
