KUALA LUMPUR – Unity government parties are “fear-mongering” with the notion that failure to vote for them in the six state elections will usher in a win by opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN), said Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
He was taking questions on BFM 89.9 this morning on whether Muda’s solo run in the coming state polls would split the vote and give room for PN to win.
“It’s fear-mongering Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) continuously use to justify their complacency and incompetence, to justify delays to the reform agenda by saying, ‘Hey, if you don’t vote us, you get a right-wing coalition instead.’”
“Muda wants to push PH to fulfil its promises and move forward instead of looking back and giving excuses.
“The reform agenda must be given ultimate priority after the state polls,” the Muar MP told the radio station.
Yesterday, Syed Saddiq announced that Muda would contest alone in the state polls after its request for membership in Pakatan Harapan (PH) was repeatedly ignored.
Today, he told the radio station that Muda does not have the power to take over a whole state government and sees the polls as a chance for Malaysians “to send a few Muda reps to state assemblies to be the people’s voice of conscience.”
He was also asked to confirm the number of seats Muda would contest, and whether they would be in all six states due for elections – Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.
While Syed Saddiq said Muda would not contest all seats, he did not directly state if it was going to stand in all six states.
“We’re not contesting all seats, we will be targeted and focused,” he said.
Muda will crowdfund for its solo run and will also allow members of the public to pitch themselves as candidates, Syed Saddiq added.
“People can nominate themselves as candidates – they must also do crowd-funding.”
Founded in 2020 after he was sacked from Bersatu following the Sheraton Move, Muda currently has only one MP, Syed Saddiq himself who is representing Muar, and one assemblyman, Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz in Puteri Wangsa.
The party was a PH ally in the Johor state election in 2022 and the 15th general election last November. – The Vibes, June 27, 2023
