KUALA LUMPUR– Dec. 23, 2022: A witness in the case of Tan Sri Shahrir Samad testified today that former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas insisted that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission proceeded with the prosecution despite incomplete investigation papers.
According to Nurzahidah Yacop, she received instruction from the prosecution in January 2020 to charge the former minister and Felda chairman.
Shahrir is charged with failing to declare to the Inland Revenue Board the RM1 million he had received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
When questioned by lawyer Datuk Syed Faisal Al-Edros for Shahrir, the MACC officer agreed that based on transactions in Shahrir’s bank account he had used his own money of over RM2.6 million for political activities before receiving the money from Najib in 2013.
However, she admitted that she never investigated the RM1 million although Shahrir insisted eight times during the investigation in 2019 that the money was to replace his own money.
Nurzahidah informed her superiors but she was not instructed to investigate further, which made her feel suspicious.
